Ugh. Really? “Colored” is old racist language for Black people. Archie Bunker, “America’s Favorite Bigot”, used it on All in the Family back in the 70’s.
This strip should not have been printed in 2021. It’s deeply offensive. I get that practically nobody cared about racism until recently, but saying that the strip was drawn in 1971 doesn’t make it OK to publish today.
Both Disney and Warner Brothers have mothballed content from their early days depicting minorities in questionable ways. GoComics should follow suit.
The Sewer Wisp said what everyone thinks, Mom, the Smoke of the Earth, is different looking. No adjective would please everyone. She was delightful and accepting of the Wisp. ;-)
We REALLY need for people to STOP judging the past by today’s standards. And we also need for people to stop expecting others to cater to their individual sensibilities. Just because someone wants to be offended by something said, it does NOT automatically mean the speaker said something wrong.
" I get that practically nobody cared about racism until recently…
No, I don’t think you “get it”. Civil rights in the U.S. have been fought for since 1774. John Brown leading to the Civil War. We had marches and beatings in the 1950s. The ‘Long, hot summers’ with rioting, burning and violence in the 1960s, with Martin Luther King’s assassination. The National Association for the Advancement of ColoredPeople was founded in 1909 and is still strong today.
Most Americans cared about racism all along, but the ugly side came out of the closet into full view a little over 4 years ago, enabled by one of their own.
Wellington J. Fransworth Spookingdorf III is just a passing wind.
Remember the Star Trek episode with two characters fighting to the death on whether black on left, white on right, or white on left, black on right was superior? I think they should have looked like Dalmatians.
Whoa that was my thought, but figured she was just a chimney dust wisp.
And to the moron who says Colored is racist. What a moron. At least know what you talk of before you do. Colored never was a term of disrespect but rather one of RESPECT. It has become passe but it and Negro were the correct terms before black came into vogue. And tell the NAACP that. That C in that black group’s name stands for colored.
To the idiot liberal whose idiot screed you chose to highlight. Boy are you stupid. Is it congenital? As they say you are entitled to your opinion, but not your own set of facts. But then liberal is a synonym for idiot. Colored was always a respectful term, it has just gone out of use, but it was always proper.
Before certain black folks decided that all black folks must be called black, colored and Negro were considered the proper terms to use. Some years ago Afro-American came into vogue and people saying were criticized. But now AA is seldom used.
Long time since this thread ended, but nevertheless. Neither white nor black are colors in theory. Whatever: Here in Germany nowadays it isn’t PC to use words referring only to men, not to woman. I think that don’t make sense. Changing the language doesn’t change reality – and if reality is changed and for ex. every wo*man has equal rights, language will adapt it sooner or later. See also “1984”, Wells. The artificial language: “Hate is Love, War is Peace” etc. was a similar attempt to change peoples mind, but in my opinion, that’s not the right way.

It’s not nice to say colored. Nowadays we say “Multi-hued”.

A sign of the times. The PC police would not allow this nowadays.
