Forgive me, but I’m with Sal on that phrase, but looking it up, the original appears to be, “like a fifth wheel,” (circa 1631) which I can understand… except cars come with a fifth, steering wheel, … and I’m back where I started. TGINM!

I didn’t even learn to ride a bicycle until I was 12. I saw a senior citizen on our quiet suburban streets riding an oversized tricycle. Isn’t that good enough? For some reason, my parents insisted I learn to ride a bicycle.
