Too bad so many strips promote the idea that men are incompetent cooks, since many of us are quite good at it. On the other hand, if they promoted the stereotype type that women are bad drivers, people would take offense.
I don’t understand why there is a trope (generally…not just here) of the father always being the one at the grill, yet simultaneously there is a trope of the father always burning things on the grill. Neither one is funny.
Poor Darryl. He is presented as being incompetent at many things: grilling, general/basic mechanical things, camping, etc. But, he is a good father husband, and provider.
Ah yes the same old incompetent men cooking jokes, yet around the world the majority of chefs are men. In the US alone 25.2% of all chefs are women, while 74.8% are men.
Grilling in popular culture tends to one of two extremes, doesn’t it? More commonly it’s the guys who stubbornly keep trying although they keep burning everything to crisps, sometimes singeing their eyebrows off, or even threatening to burn down the neighborhood; and then there’s the rare guy who’s a real grill master who happily makes enough for the whole neighborhood because they all come when they smell his grilling.

If you still burn burgers after a couple tries, you shouldn’t be grilling.

We men need our dignity so don’t show the pizza until it’s already hopeless….should be several more seconds.

Now where’s the fun in that? Maybe Darryl needs grilling tips from Ted Forth.

Yet again comics bring up the subject of men’s inability to do anything right. No, this doesn’t hurt my feelings, I’m just tired of this trope.
