I have an antique gold Elgin lady’s watch that was my grandmother’s. It is engraved with her initial “D” (for Dola). It is over 120 years old, but not very valuable. At the time, the style was for women to wear them on a chain that hung from a pin on their sweater. I used to wear it as a pocket watch whenever I wore a suit vest.
I mentioned yesterday that I have my grandfather’s Longines pocket watch that’s well over 100 years old. I’ve never had it appraised – although I probably should have for insurance purposes. After yesterday’s comments, my curiosity got the better of me and I started to do a little online research. Turns out that a comparable Longines pocket watch from that era, in the same style, is worth between 4 to 5 figures!
I believe it would be better to sell it and enjoy a few nice things for yourself and your family. Holding onto something that expensive invites heartache, theft or loss.
If the item will be used it worth keeping it. If the item will not be used then it should be passed along (sold or gift) to someone who will use it and care for it daily.

Baldo needs to tell his father how much the watch is worth. Dad probably did not intend to give him something worth $20,000.
