That tipping stupidity in the US I didn’t get when I was there. Have a decent pay for them and let me do tipping based on the service I get! Have them look for annother position, not starve them when they’re too challenged to do the job.

When I’m satisfied I know there’s a team effort behind that and I expect the tip to be pooled and divided by the whole team (except the boss of course). When I’m not I talk to the manager about what made my experience unpleasant. If he’s too cheap to have enough towels in the restroom, if the ingrediences are bad quality, if the staff’s short – I rap him for it, but won’t have the staff suffer for bad managerial decisions.

The “good” waitresses I know when asked about making significantly higher hourly wage versus getting great tips for great service they would prefer the tips. One told me that to do otherwise you would get the same service you get at the DMV. Another asked me if the orders were still wrong at the fast food drive thru when the government mandated wage hikes went into effect?

Bad service gets a word with the manager. A word with the manager gets a discount or comp’d meal. A word with the manager also gets a crappy server a stern talk-to. So, Betty’s not that far off.

Automatic “tips” are a crock and a half. Charge what you need to and no tipping.

When I waitered I hated people like Betty. We made subminimum and counted on fair tips. Then cows like her would punish us if things out of our control went wrong. A sudden mad rush, mistakes in the kitchen, etc, where we treated the customer like the Queen of Sheba and practically did gymnastics trying to satisfy them and they’d still leave a ten cent tip. I’m sorry but if this crap goes on another day I think I’m done with this strip. Wait staff is already held hostage enough by selfish people. I don’t need comic strips glorifying them…

Good heavens- if someone says that to a waiter in real life their food is gonna have one hell of a concoction of human juices in it when it finally leaves that kitchen. Who on Earth would say that before the food comes out?
