Toto in “The Wizard of Oz” was also played by a girl. She was originally named Terry, and was already a film veteran at that point, but after “Oz” her name was officially changed to Toto.
Not to mention some male human characters that were played by females. Take Peter Pan for example. Over the past 100 years, Peter has been played by no less than 8 different females in film, TV, and major theatrical productions.

On the other hand all of the dogs who played Lassie were male.

Didn’t it turn out that their resident Bassejackelope is actually of the female persuasion?

The big reveal. That everyone but Opus knew already. Get his fainting couch out.

I’d find it hard to believe that Morris was a female since there are very few orange female cats.
