Every October, the cemetery where I serve as a guide sponsors the RIP 5K,which, as you might guess, is a 5 kilometer race through the grounds. And because the event occurs in October, participants are encouraged to wear Halloween costumes. So, on the day of the race, it is not unusual to see super-heroes, dinosaurs and, of course, witchesâ-running through the cemetery.
I saw the absolute best finish to a marathon one year, when I was a volunteer. I was a road crossing monitor/guard at the 6-mile point, so I was dismissed from my post shortly after the last person went by. I went to the finish area to help out there. The awards ceremony came and went, and people were hanging out at the food and beverage tent. About twenty minutes before the race time limit was called, it was announced that the last racer was approaching. The overall winners, as well as the celebrity runners and many others ran out to meet him and accompanied him to the finish line. They, and the crowd which formed along the final few hundred feet cheered him on as if he was in first place. He was the oldest runner, the only one in his age class, and still doing his best to keep a runnerâs form. After he had time to recover, he was escorted to the stage and celebrated as the true champion of the race.

I was in a race with my brother (running from) and my glasses fell off. But I went back and got them, luckily they were OK.

My Grandma ran a 5K once. Last one across the finish line , but first in her age division.

And Broomie would still be better than me attempting to run a marathon.
jagedlo about 2 years ago
That sounds like a reasonable goal there, Broomie!

Itâs take me a couple of days of steady walking to do a marathon. I donât run anymore, I see no reason to.

But she finished. Thatâs better than a lot of younger people manage.

Thatâs okay, Broomie. I can see youâre glowing (Old Saying: âhorses sweat; men perspire; ladies glowâ) and gave it your best Old Witch try!
