I dunno. Mom can imagine quite a bit…like how much damage Calvin’s imagination is going to do to himself and everyone and everything around him. And she’s never wrong, either.
There’s no such thing as a normal human being without imagination. What role it plays in one’s psyche depends on one’s personality type, and then on one’s experiences. Mom’s seems to be directed most strongly toward foreseeing consequences accurately, a good thing too because she’s got a son who’s oblivious to such things.
@Mrs. Luke Skywalker: Begging your pardon, but I don’t need to prove a thing. The archives from beginning to end prove what I’ve said…to anybody who understands a modicum of how the human mind works and who doesn’t assume everyone else’s personality type has to Be Like His or Hers in order to be valid.
Lack of imagination isn’t Dad’s problem or Mom’s. They just have different personality types from Calvin’s and don’t know how to deal with his type. It’s a common problem. I could walk you through it if you like, but really such a thing is best discovered by you. The resources are out there. They can change your perspective on many, many things. They have changed mine.
One thing they haven’t changed enough - yet - is my inability to suffer foolishness gladly. But know this, I don’t argue with you or anybody else for the sake of arguing, and I’m not nearly as off-base in what I say as you think. Again, you can and should discover this for yourself.
Here at my house, it is Mama that reads the bedtime stories (most of the time) AND Mama that does the dishes (most of the time). My husband does help out when he can, but his work schedule … I can’t describe it accurately here since there may be children that read the comments.
Wow! What comments! Calvin’s listening to his parents and who knows what damage is being done, but thank goodness he can’t hear the comment section today. By the way Johanan Rakaav: I think Calvin is alot of “foolishness” so why read it “gladly”. I myself do read it gladly and enjoy it.
Let me get this straight. Prince Charming met Princess Mom who had Calvin out of wedlock, leaving Princess Mon to become unwed mother Mon while Prince Charming lived a life of ease in Las Vegas with 500 show girls. Glad we got that straightened out.
Ladies, I’m moving to Antarctica tomorrow, so Na Na Na Na Na!
You see, Calvin’s dad doesn’t understand the sort of things that are common knowledge in my house. For example, when my lovely female accomplice cooks dinner I do the dishes. When I cook, on the other hand, I do the dishes. Simple concept isn’t it? :-)
MisngNOLA if i read your description correctly, the “Simple concept” would appear to be that your “lovely female accomplice” (and what a nice way to put it!) simply doesn’t do dishes! as for Mrs. Luke & Johanan i tend to side with the latter, simply because he isn’t as consistenly negative as the former (thou why anyone would care what i think about them is beyond me).
Calvins mom has imagination,,, she is imagining all the medical bills that Calvin would rack up if she wasn’t always a step ahead of him each and everyday!
i have always read stories to the kids from early childhood and they all grew to like reading.
in fact my step daughter just had her first novel published.
“Hey diddle diddle
The cat and the fiddle
The cow jumped over the moon
The little dog laughed to see such sport
And the dish ran away with the spoon!
“Read that one to Calvin several times, Dad, and bring it to life. Soon there won’t be any dishes left to do.”
Then Calvin will have tomorrow’s Chocolate Frosted Sugar Bombs on a napkin (without milk, of course).
Apparently Mom isn’t familiar with the word ‘Charming’.
That’s what she gets for eavesdropping, anyway.
Maybe Mom just likes bedtime stories. Read her a few favorites. You might get to give ‘Beauty’ a goodnight kiss after all.
bald716 what book did step daughter publish?
Me I would read to both kids when they where little. Then that ended and I would tell them go to sleep. This would give especially one a chance to stay up longer. My youngest really didn’t need bed time stories read she would fall asleep easy like her dad.
Me when I can’t sleep at night I would read for awhile.
My mom told me I got that from dad I told her not I enjoyed reading when we didn’t have books to read long before dad started reading after retirement. When I started working I would get books. Library wasn’t close by.
Isn’t it refreshing to realize that many of us have carried our “calvinism” so far into our maturity. Or perhaps it’s more frightening than refreshing! Calvin certainly does receive interesting answers to his questions.
Well, Dad, I guess it’s time for you to step up to the ‘plate’ and do the dishes. Otherwise, there will be no ‘spooning’ tonight. I hope it ‘pans’ out for you. “SOS.” - Abba
Mom and Dad are usually pretty united in dealing with Calvin (except for Mom’s impatience with some of Dad’s wild answers to Calvin’s questions). Since we don’t see much else of what goes on in their house, I don’t know if we should assume too much about the daily division of labor. Maybe Mom just had a bad day.
And if Dad has to read ‘Hamster Huey and the Gooie Kablooie’ (did I spell that right?) and do the Happy Hamster Hop for the millionth time, maybe he’s actually doing Mom a favor by letting her off the hook?
I also loved reading to my kids when they were little (especially Dr. Seuss). Most fun in the world!
The “dishwasher” in Calvin’s house appears to be broken and out of service. If things continue in this way, it may be out of order permanently….Hobbes to the rescue?
Hi I’m new to this sight . Been a C&H fan for years. One thing I have always thought . What would DAD and MOM do if Calvin…..I’m not sure I can even say it…..if Calvin …OH the horror……if Calvin would of been ……TWINS!!! Destruction,Mahem, the world tilted off it’s ax’es. The world can only take one Calvin and Hobbes @ a time. Lucky for us we are in that time……….
I always read to my children and let the dishes soak! I didn’t work outside the home and I’ve never seen any evidence that Calvin’s mom does. In that case, it doesn’t really make sense to expect the father to come home from work and do housework.

Mom has an imagination: when out hunting Hobbes at night, she starts calling him–so at least she’s empathic with Calvin’s imagination.
She also imagines what Calvin might be up to from rather small (as well as not-so-small) hints.
And she can imagine a life without a babysitter if they ever lose Rosslyn.
