I dunno. Mom can imagine quite a bitā€¦like how much damage Calvinā€™s imagination is going to do to himself and everyone and everything around him. And sheā€™s never wrong, either.

Thereā€™s no such thing as a normal human being without imagination. What role it plays in oneā€™s psyche depends on oneā€™s personality type, and then on oneā€™s experiences. Momā€™s seems to be directed most strongly toward foreseeing consequences accurately, a good thing too because sheā€™s got a son whoā€™s oblivious to such things.

@Mrs. Luke Skywalker: Begging your pardon, but I donā€™t need to prove a thing. The archives from beginning to end prove what Iā€™ve saidā€¦to anybody who understands a modicum of how the human mind works and who doesnā€™t assume everyone elseā€™s personality type has to Be Like His or Hers in order to be valid.

Lack of imagination isnā€™t Dadā€™s problem or Momā€™s. They just have different personality types from Calvinā€™s and donā€™t know how to deal with his type. Itā€™s a common problem. I could walk you through it if you like, but really such a thing is best discovered by you. The resources are out there. They can change your perspective on many, many things. They have changed mine.

One thing they havenā€™t changed enough - yet - is my inability to suffer foolishness gladly. But know this, I donā€™t argue with you or anybody else for the sake of arguing, and Iā€™m not nearly as off-base in what I say as you think. Again, you can and should discover this for yourself.

Here at my house, it is Mama that reads the bedtime stories (most of the time) AND Mama that does the dishes (most of the time). My husband does help out when he can, but his work schedule ā€¦ I canā€™t describe it accurately here since there may be children that read the comments.

By the way Johanan Rakaav: I think Calvin is alot of ā€œfoolishnessā€ so why read it ā€œgladlyā€. I myself do read it gladly and enjoy it.

You see, Calvinā€™s dad doesnā€™t understand the sort of things that are common knowledge in my house. For example, when my lovely female accomplice cooks dinner I do the dishes. When I cook, on the other hand, I do the dishes. Simple concept isnā€™t it? :-)

MisngNOLA if i read your description correctly, the ā€œSimple conceptā€ would appear to be that your ā€œlovely female accompliceā€ (and what a nice way to put it!) simply doesnā€™t do dishes! as for Mrs. Luke & Johanan i tend to side with the latter, simply because he isnā€™t as consistenly negative as the former (thou why anyone would care what i think about them is beyond me).

Apparently Mom isnā€™t familiar with the word ā€˜Charmingā€™. Thatā€™s what she gets for eavesdropping, anyway. Maybe Mom just likes bedtime stories. Read her a few favorites. You might get to give ā€˜Beautyā€™ a goodnight kiss after all.

bald716 what book did step daughter publish? Me I would read to both kids when they where little. Then that ended and I would tell them go to sleep. This would give especially one a chance to stay up longer. My youngest really didnā€™t need bed time stories read she would fall asleep easy like her dad. Me when I canā€™t sleep at night I would read for awhile. My mom told me I got that from dad I told her not I enjoyed reading when we didnā€™t have books to read long before dad started reading after retirement. When I started working I would get books. Library wasnā€™t close by.

Mom has an imagination: when out hunting Hobbes at night, she starts calling himā€“so at least sheā€™s empathic with Calvinā€™s imagination.

She also imagines what Calvin might be up to from rather small (as well as not-so-small) hints.

And she can imagine a life without a babysitter if they ever lose Rosslyn.

Mom and Dad are usually pretty united in dealing with Calvin (except for Momā€™s impatience with some of Dadā€™s wild answers to Calvinā€™s questions). Since we donā€™t see much else of what goes on in their house, I donā€™t know if we should assume too much about the daily division of labor. Maybe Mom just had a bad day.

And if Dad has to read ā€˜Hamster Huey and the Gooie Kablooieā€™ (did I spell that right?) and do the Happy Hamster Hop for the millionth time, maybe heā€™s actually doing Mom a favor by letting her off the hook?

I also loved reading to my kids when they were little (especially Dr. Seuss). Most fun in the world!

I always read to my children and let the dishes soak! I didnā€™t work outside the home and Iā€™ve never seen any evidence that Calvinā€™s mom does. In that case, it doesnā€™t really make sense to expect the father to come home from work and do housework.

Sheā€™s a stay at home mom and wants him to do part of the work at home. As a single dad, I raised two kids, worked 60 hours a week and did the house work without any hired help and only minimal help from the kids! They had their own work to do what with going to school and homework. During the summer they had jobs. My daughter dusted and vacuumed and my son mowed the grass and any other outside work that was needed. They made their beds and changed the sheets. I cooked, washed the dishes, washed the clothes, etc.!!!
