I dunno. Mom can imagine quite a bitâŠlike how much damage Calvinâs imagination is going to do to himself and everyone and everything around him. And sheâs never wrong, either.
Thereâs no such thing as a normal human being without imagination. What role it plays in oneâs psyche depends on oneâs personality type, and then on oneâs experiences. Momâs seems to be directed most strongly toward foreseeing consequences accurately, a good thing too because sheâs got a son whoâs oblivious to such things.
@Mrs. Luke Skywalker: Begging your pardon, but I donât need to prove a thing. The archives from beginning to end prove what Iâve saidâŠto anybody who understands a modicum of how the human mind works and who doesnât assume everyone elseâs personality type has to Be Like His or Hers in order to be valid.
Lack of imagination isnât Dadâs problem or Momâs. They just have different personality types from Calvinâs and donât know how to deal with his type. Itâs a common problem. I could walk you through it if you like, but really such a thing is best discovered by you. The resources are out there. They can change your perspective on many, many things. They have changed mine.
One thing they havenât changed enough - yet - is my inability to suffer foolishness gladly. But know this, I donât argue with you or anybody else for the sake of arguing, and Iâm not nearly as off-base in what I say as you think. Again, you can and should discover this for yourself.
Here at my house, it is Mama that reads the bedtime stories (most of the time) AND Mama that does the dishes (most of the time). My husband does help out when he can, but his work schedule ⊠I canât describe it accurately here since there may be children that read the comments.
Wow! What comments! Calvinâs listening to his parents and who knows what damage is being done, but thank goodness he canât hear the comment section today. By the way Johanan Rakaav: I think Calvin is alot of âfoolishnessâ so why read it âgladlyâ. I myself do read it gladly and enjoy it.
Let me get this straight. Prince Charming met Princess Mom who had Calvin out of wedlock, leaving Princess Mon to become unwed mother Mon while Prince Charming lived a life of ease in Las Vegas with 500 show girls. Glad we got that straightened out.
Ladies, Iâm moving to Antarctica tomorrow, so Na Na Na Na Na!
You see, Calvinâs dad doesnât understand the sort of things that are common knowledge in my house. For example, when my lovely female accomplice cooks dinner I do the dishes. When I cook, on the other hand, I do the dishes. Simple concept isnât it? :-)
MisngNOLA if i read your description correctly, the âSimple conceptâ would appear to be that your âlovely female accompliceâ (and what a nice way to put it!) simply doesnât do dishes! as for Mrs. Luke & Johanan i tend to side with the latter, simply because he isnât as consistenly negative as the former (thou why anyone would care what i think about them is beyond me).
And to those of you with the ability to enjoy a good comic strip â thank you for the fun comments. And for staying on subject ⊠Itâs a comic strip!
Calvins mom has imagination,,, she is imagining all the medical bills that Calvin would rack up if she wasnât always a step ahead of him each and everyday!
i have always read stories to the kids from early childhood and they all grew to like reading.
in fact my step daughter just had her first novel published.
âHey diddle diddle
The cat and the fiddle
The cow jumped over the moon
The little dog laughed to see such sport
And the dish ran away with the spoon!
âRead that one to Calvin several times, Dad, and bring it to life. Soon there wonât be any dishes left to do.â
Then Calvin will have tomorrowâs Chocolate Frosted Sugar Bombs on a napkin (without milk, of course).
Apparently Mom isnât familiar with the word âCharmingâ.
Thatâs what she gets for eavesdropping, anyway.
Maybe Mom just likes bedtime stories. Read her a few favorites. You might get to give âBeautyâ a goodnight kiss after all.
bald716 what book did step daughter publish?
Me I would read to both kids when they where little. Then that ended and I would tell them go to sleep. This would give especially one a chance to stay up longer. My youngest really didnât need bed time stories read she would fall asleep easy like her dad.
Me when I canât sleep at night I would read for awhile.
My mom told me I got that from dad I told her not I enjoyed reading when we didnât have books to read long before dad started reading after retirement. When I started working I would get books. Library wasnât close by.
Isnât it refreshing to realize that many of us have carried our âcalvinismâ so far into our maturity. Or perhaps itâs more frightening than refreshing! Calvin certainly does receive interesting answers to his questions.
Well, Dad, I guess itâs time for you to step up to the âplateâ and do the dishes. Otherwise, there will be no âspooningâ tonight. I hope it âpansâ out for you. âSOS.â - Abba
Mom and Dad are usually pretty united in dealing with Calvin (except for Momâs impatience with some of Dadâs wild answers to Calvinâs questions). Since we donât see much else of what goes on in their house, I donât know if we should assume too much about the daily division of labor. Maybe Mom just had a bad day.
And if Dad has to read âHamster Huey and the Gooie Kablooieâ (did I spell that right?) and do the Happy Hamster Hop for the millionth time, maybe heâs actually doing Mom a favor by letting her off the hook?
I also loved reading to my kids when they were little (especially Dr. Seuss). Most fun in the world!
The âdishwasherâ in Calvinâs house appears to be broken and out of service. If things continue in this way, it may be out of order permanentlyâŠ.Hobbes to the rescue?
Hi Iâm new to this sight . Been a C&H fan for years. One thing I have always thought . What would DAD and MOM do if CalvinâŠ..Iâm not sure I can even say itâŠ..if Calvin âŠOH the horrorâŠâŠif Calvin would of been âŠâŠTWINS!!! Destruction,Mahem, the world tilted off itâs axâes. The world can only take one Calvin and Hobbes @ a time. Lucky for us we are in that timeâŠâŠâŠ.
I always read to my children and let the dishes soak! I didnât work outside the home and Iâve never seen any evidence that Calvinâs mom does. In that case, it doesnât really make sense to expect the father to come home from work and do housework.
Sheâs a stay at home mom and wants him to do part of the work at home. As a single dad, I raised two kids, worked 60 hours a week and did the house work without any hired help and only minimal help from the kids! They had their own work to do what with going to school and homework. During the summer they had jobs. My daughter dusted and vacuumed and my son mowed the grass and any other outside work that was needed. They made their beds and changed the sheets. I cooked, washed the dishes, washed the clothes, etc.!!!

Mom has an imagination: when out hunting Hobbes at night, she starts calling himâso at least sheâs empathic with Calvinâs imagination.
She also imagines what Calvin might be up to from rather small (as well as not-so-small) hints.
And she can imagine a life without a babysitter if they ever lose Rosslyn.
