Takin’ a peeUnder the sea.No one can see you taking a pee under the sea.You just let go; it feels so warm,An’ it don’t do nobody no harm. You’ll feel much betterCan’t get no wetter,Under the sea!
Wow, if Calvin isn’t being mean and nasty in this strip, someone else is. There’s way too much nastiness in this world of man, and seeing it in a so called comic strip really isn’t funny. Time to remove this one from the list.
Apparently, getting a few welts is worse than getting wet in the water. However, I agree with Thirdguy (and others), “Now that’s just not right!” even in a comic. It’s really threatened child abuse.
I suppose if we don’t take everything too seriously, allowances can be made for things that should not be tolerated in real life, but I surely wouldn’t want Rosalyn as my swimming instructor!BTW, that wound-up towel sort of looks like Hobbes’ tail!
Roz understands Calvin and that’s his major problem, he has mom and dad buffaloed but not her! For those who recall, in one of the very first Sunday strips she was introduced and had Calvin under complete control in about 3 minutes.
Calvin fears her not because she’s mean and/or cruel but because she’s on to him and he knows he can’t fool her.
@jkhandy I guess you never watched cartoons growing up. Or did Bugs Bunny’s attitude bother you as well? Some people are just too sensitive to exist in the real world.
Lifeguards are taught resuscitation and things like that—but some things Rosalyn learned on her own. Poor Calvin, bullied by a tall, leggy, blonde drill sergeant.
While bodysurfing off Zuma or Santa Monica beach in the 60’s we would warm ourselves up by singing Yellow River by I.P. Freely. Besides, the bathrooms were too far away and the sand would burn our feet. You couldn’t pay me to go in that water now. It was polluted then (but who knew?) and now it’s got to be toxic.
Bill Murry was made for that part. Our city pool was closed one day after the real deal was found. The next day they told us that the pool was drained cleaned and refilled all in one night. Yea sure.
How in the world does a six – year old know the meaning of the word “resuscitate”, much less how to use it? This kid should be in Special Education, no question……
You have to keep moving in water to stay warm. If you can’t swim any more, there is a thing called HELP (Heat Escape Lessen Posture); wherein you bring your arms and legs to your chest and float.
<DreamScourge — I know how you feel Calvin it’s because of people like that at swimming pools (and freezing water) that I didn’t learn to swim until I was 40 _>
I’m with you — my swimming teacher was a sarcastic bully, so I didn’t learn to swim until I figured it out for myself around 35. As I said yesterday, what is mom thinking — I wouldn’t leave a kid with Roz for 5 minutes.

In the 20+ years since I first read this strip, I have seen several rat tails but never heard them called by name. Must be a regionalism.

Oh, another thought:
From Addams Family Values:
Gary: Now, one of you will be the drowning victim and the other one gets to be our lifesaver.
Amanda: I’ll be the victim!
Wednesday: All your life.
++++
Followed by:
Gary: Now jump in, swim out a few yards, and start drowning.
Amanda: Help me! Help me! I’m drowning! Help me! I’m dying!
Wednesday: I can’t swim.

A little Haiku I came up with for today’s “situation”:
Calvin’s nemesis . . .
Babysitter turned lifeguard.
No rat tail for him!
