Calvin must have been sent home from school early and found Mom getting ready for an Aviance night with Dad. That was her explanation.(“Aviance night”.,.boy did I date myself. Again.)
Trust me, they do. I’ve seen it as a kid, and I’ve seen it as a parent volunteering in class. The reason? Because one of the best lessons a teacher can give their students is that on the road to learning (or any other enterprise), we ALL make mistakes. It is far better to admit a mistake, apologize if necessary, and then learn from those mistakes. It is the dangerous teacher (or parent) who believes they should never admit to mistakes.
I am happy to say, the better teachers do apologize when wrong. One of my most respected college professors, who has passed on, once called my mother at home, in tears to apologize to her, and by extension, to me, for losing a paper I had written and submitted. This was before the days of word processing being common, so there was no back up copy of the assignment. Since my average would have amounted to the same with or without the project grade, it truly didn’t matter even if I received no credit at all for the paper. But I respected her all the more for telling me that it happened. She wound up excusing the project and computing my average based on the other grades I had on file.
We always seem to remember the best and the worst of our teachers. One of my favorites was a crusty old codger who taught history in high school. He would make the most outrageous statements and challenge us to argue against him. Though he never said it in class, he gave a grade for logical thinking. I remember hating him, at the time. It wasn’t until I went on to college that I realized the skills he was teaching.
It is wrong to blame everything on Calvin. Miss Wormwood sending home a note is an overreaction. Calvin seeing his mom as Wonder Woman was actually his way of showing some respect to her and telling a creative story to the class. With crabby teachers and stifling initiative like that it is no question why Calvin hates the public school system.

We have a friend whose son got in trouble at school because he told everyone his dad was a race car driver and his mom was a scuba diving instructor.
I wonder if the teacher apologized, because the boy was telling the truth.

Calvin’s Dad had best get his ideas out of his head if he knows what’s good for him. Just see the look on Mom’s face!!
