Sorry, but that was stuck in my head and the only way to get rid of an earworm is to share it with others.

    I’ll pinch hit.

There is no biblical reason to celebrate Christmas in the first place, but choosing a pagan holiday for it was just wrong. His birth was probably in late September. That is taken from the fact that Elizabeth conceived just after the Course of Abia, and was 6 months along when she encountered the newly pregnant Mary.

My only real beef with “Easter” is the name. I do not call it that.

The closest we get to ‘tomorrow’ (in common units of measure) is at 12:59:59 pm.Next thing you know, it’s a whole day away.Whatever . . . it gives us something to look forward to.

I never make New Years resolutions, it’s just setting myself up for failure. I make the changes I need to make as they come up.

Watmiwori, someone told me just lately: “There are two demons that try to steal our peace: one is called Yesterday, and the other, Tomorrow.”

So, if one has a fear of using incorrect grammar in the future, does that make the present tense?

There are some posts yesterday near the end which you maynot have seen.

Looked like I opened a few floodgates. Well, Belinda Roseannadanna can keep her ‘firsts’. At least she’s not at itevery day like she useta was. I think she even made an actual, relevant bona fide comment once.

They moved it to the same date as the Pagan holiday for safety reasons. Worshiping Christ in that area and that time was pretty much suicide. So it was put on that date so they could celebrate the birth of Christ, and all he has given us, without being found out.

New Year’s is an artificial holiday; it has no connections to national events (like July 4), nor religious background (like Christmas); it’s just the passing of a digit on the calendar and – for too many – an excuse to get drunk. (Of course, I’ll take the day off; I’m not stupid…)

As I said a few days back, Queen Elisabeth has two birthdays, her actual date of birth and the official celebration. Why shouldn’t Christ the King have the same consideration? We celebrate the fact, not the actual day.

When I was a kid, they told us that in the future we were supposed to have domed cities, rocket packs and monorails going everywhere. The only things that came true were the computer networks. Nobody said anything about the North Koreans hacking into them.

This debate about Christmas is, again, much ado about nothing. Some very good points have been made about Dec 25 being chosen to help pagans make the transition to Christianity, for secrecy and safety, etc. In addition, even those who insist that Christ wasn’t born in December can’t agree whether he was born in Spring or Fall. The bottom line is that we don’t know the exact date he was born. December 25 is as good a date as any to celebrate the fact that he WAS born. It also fits well within the liturgical year, preparing believers for the Passion and Easter. And for those who think that Christians are celebrating a “pagan” holiday by celebrating Christmas, you’d better hope your birthday is not on a Thursday or you will inadvertently be worshipping Thor. Or if you have any celebrations between January and June, you may be inadvertently offering praise to Roman gods. For 1700 years, Christmas has been celebrated on Dec 25 and, from its beginning, Christians have known who it is that they are honoring and remembering. If you don’t want to celebrate, don’t. If you want to celebrate it on a different date, go ahead. But leave the rest of us to celebrate on December 25. We have more good reasons for doing so than you think we do.

I remember the day I realized that my contemporaries were not growing up just getting older. I had hoped things would improve but realized I was standing higher up the slippery slope than where we were heading. And here we are, not at the bottom yet.

@thebird55Your comments on the validity of Christmas being Dec. 25th are misleading.

Christians weren’t celebrating Christmas on the 25th to distract believers from the Saturnalia or the feast of the unconquered sun. Pagans were trying to distract themselves from Christmas which was already well entrenched by the fourth century after Christ.

In certain places they celebrated the death of Christ on March 25. In the Hebrew calendar, that date was the 14th of Nissan. It was the anniversary of the first Passover, the Exodus and of the creation of the world.

It was always thought that a prophet died on the anniversary of his conception and so, Jesus dying on the Passover, meant that he would have been conceived on the Passover and thus born nine months after Passover, the 25th day of December on the ancient Roman calendar.

For Christians, celebrating Christmas and Easter on particular dates is a means to an end. The dates are not an end in themselves.

I was attempting to make a point without gettng bogged down details, which are all debatable anyway. It does not matter why the date was chosen. The fact is that it was chosen, by man. It is not up to man to choose how to worship God (Proverbs 14:12). And it is my personal belief that if we were supposed to observe His birth, we would have been given the date.

    Beware the traditions of man.

    Mark 7:13 (KJV)

13 Making the word of God of none effect through your tradition, which ye have delivered: and many such like things do ye.

(This is a rare occasion that it might be best to deviate from the KJV. From the ISV: Mark 7:13 You are destroying the word of God through your tradition that you have handed down. And you do many other things like that.)
