I still have a VCR and several wonderful old movies to watch now and then. But I cut the cord to cable/satellite years ago. Endless mindless annoying commercials, and I am expected to pay to watch them?? Hahahahaha!!
The DVD recorder on my VCR/DVD recorder combo stopped working, so now I’m back to time shifting on VCR. I can’t find any more blank tapes for sale, but I found three blank tapes around the house to use. The VCR still doesn’t work unless I open up the tapes and remove the hub locks from them. I don’t have cable so it doesn’t make sense to buy a DVR. I’m just trying to nurse things along until I become rich and famous.
“:Everybody I know”? Calvin, you only know Susie and Hobbs. You never go into Susie’s house, and I am pretty sure that Hobbs doesn’t have cable or a VCR either.
Still have a VCR hooked up to the TV at our getaway on an island north of Seattle. HAD to watch it when I was up and the cable was out and somehow survived. The thing about VHS tapes is that you can pick them up dirt-cheap at thrift stores and a great movie is a great movie whether you’re watching it on Blu-Ray, DVD or VHS.
This will backfire, because Calvin will surely want to become the Artful Dodger (and then Fagin…….)I have a VCR that still works fine, and a DVD player that works fine, and never had cable a day in my life and doubt I missed over much.
You can still get all the new VHS tapes you want on eBay. I have 5 VCR’s hooked up to my cable, can record more shows simultaneously than any of my friends with DVR’s. And I don’t run into “DVR full” problems – just put in another tape. And try taking your DVR recording to someone else’s house – easy with a tape!
Cable TV, Calvin? We cut the cable more than a year ago. Not only did we not have to dust off the VCR and the Laserdisc, neither of which would work despite a swift kick, we had to submit ourselves to the printed page. Wow! You know what is really great? Reading Silas Marner! First time in tenth grade (detest it!); Fast forward (forgive the expression) fifty years and YOWZA! A great book. Better than the movie. But, I bet you have already read the classics, right? Ok, Hobbes, I know you want to see the National Geographics Channel. Suck it up, Feline!
Just you wait, Calvin’s parents! just you wait until you become old gray and full of arthritis and Calvin put you in the nursing home where they have actually no cable or Satellite whatsoever and they have the same local channels then you’ll realize that Calvin is trying to get you to switch but it’s too late for that

"Please, sir, I want HBO.” You can’t have HBO if you don’t read your Dickens! How can you have HBO if you don’t read your Dickens?

Actually, I think Tom Sawyer would have been a better book for a boy like Calvin… unless his parents are trying to teach him a lesson.

Don’t have cable, don’t plan on ever getting cable. There’s nothing on TV worth watching these days.

I read “Oliver Twist” when I was about 10, not much older than Calvin. I loved it, totally unaware how much I missed of what was actually going on.
