He tripped over his own feet, which is less embarrassing than tripping over nothing. His flip was amazing. What would the score be if he was in the Olympics?
Whenever our son tripped ( little kids do that often ) I’d look at him, say " Safe at second " and give the safe sign. He’d get up dust himself off, smile and keep on motoring. Scrapes and bruises were just a part of being a boy.
I saw a young girl riding a bike do a flip rather like that (no idea what caused it.) Thinking we were going to have to scoop her up with at least one broken bone, to our surprise she sprang up, picked up her bike, shook herself down and said, “How stupid!” and rode off.
When my son was about three, he came running around the car, tripped and went face first onto the lawn. He laid there a moment and then started fiddling around with the grass in front of himself, acting like he had intended to do that and was just looking for something. It was SOOOOO funny.
When I was young like Calvin, and tripped or fell accidentally, I would just get up, brush myself off, and continue on my merry way.
Â
Now that I’m a senior, if I trip and fall I do two things before I get back on my feet.
First, I look around to see if anyone was a witness to my embarrassment, and second, while I am down I look and see if there is anything I need to do while I am on the floor or ground…
The legend says that William the Conqueror tripped as he was disembarking from his ship. But, thinking quickly, he grabbed two handfuls of English soil and shouted, “Thus do I grasp this land!”

I don’t know what I find more impressive:
Calvin’s recovery or that he managed to trip over nothing.

Looks to me like he landed on his butt, not his feet.

What you do after an “oops” depends entirely on the audience that saw it happen.

Reminds me of seeing a cat leap for the porch, miss, land and instantly start grooming to make it clear nothing happened.

Sigh.

I once did that sort of thing down the long escalator at King’s Cross-St Pancras and landed on my feet. Nobody applauded.
