Looks this comic was originally released in 1989, a year after John Madden’s Football came out. Dad must be holding out against video games, as a lifelong character building exercise.

Ahem. Being an intellectual is not without its bumps and bruises…

No guarantee that you won’t get whomped, there! In fact, the drubbings given those who disagree with the mainstream are pretty, well, not pretty. Jobs get lost, positions eliminated, reputations are destroyed for those who don’t happen to go along with the realpolitik of the moment.

I hear the CPU (Chess Pawns United) is in dispute against FIDE (Fédération Internationale des Échecs) asking for greater protections in the en passant move.

One of the least happy people I ever knew had “decided to be an intellectual” despite not really having the horsepower to pull it off. He was a (very poor quality) instructor at the University where I was a TA… and constantly the butt of jokes.

Do not take Hobbes to be less intellectual on this count. You never know what this feline can achieve in chess. But I like the sheer strength of Hobbes in over howling the little boy.
