Went to a small rural school. When the weather was decent we would choose up sides once a week and play at recesses all week. We had a book of rules and a couple of older kids who made sure we played by all the rules, or most of them anyway. If problems, there was a time out while they studied the book.
Yeah, I was never really into that kind of stuff as well. We didn’t have recess baseball the way Calvin’s school did, but we would sometimes play baseball in gym class, or kickball (which works the same way but with a gym ball and no bat.) For recess they usually let us just run around outside and cut loose (we didn’t really have a proper playground, so they let us just run around on the blacktop.)
Hey! The Army did right by me! I ain’t got no complaints. (Until they put me out on a medical despite my protests. I could still move, shoot, and communicate.)

And if that doesn’t work, Calvin could be a Ghostbuster.

You can get paid from playing baseball. Just ask Gerrit Cole.

I’m beginning to think that if a boy is big and strong, he’d be better off with shot put than football.

Sandlot games are okay, it’s when parents and uniforms get involved that things go downhill.

It’s recess, for gosh sakes. How long does that last? Not long enough for such formality.

Calvinball is much more exciting than baseball.

If I’m not mistaken, baseball players also get paid, probably more than soldiers.

I’m with Calvin: team sports are for those who need armies behind them. I always was attracted to fencing, archery, shooting and martial arts.
As to the Army: I did get drafted and learned to smoke pot, drink warm beer, avoid work and get shot at. REAL fun!

Any chance that the Calvin and Hobbes daily strips could all be colored, as all of Peanuts has been done? : )
