Wow, what a large word for a first grader. Do you think he may be thinking about preparing himself for entering the Scripts National Spelling Bee Contest in the future?
Signs like that are meaningless until the ‘real meaning’ is perceived. Surprisingly, Calvin has done it very well. Sadly, many automatically reject explanations such as his.
As I’ve mentioned before, Bill Watterson explained in The Calvin And Hobbes Tenth Anniversary Book, “I do not see Hobbes as a toy who miraculously comes to life when he and Calvin are alone. Nor do I see Hobbes as a product of Calvin’s imagination.”
That he didn’t see Hobbes as part of Calvin’s imagination is shown again here. Calvin was alone in yesterday’s strip and today’s follow-up has Hobbes walking towards Calvin. Also, Hobbes may well be speaking to us rather than Calvin as he is looking towards us. Some strips certainly have Hobbes speaking to us when Calvin isn’t with him.
I learned cloud formations the summer between 7th and 8th grade. Much later I learned the three kinds of cumulus — humilis, mediocre and congestus. Cumulonimbus is a thundercloud, so does Calvin think he’s a storm?
I wondered if this was a sign the strip was close to ending, but it’s from 1992, and the strip ran until 1995. Maybe an early portent of things to (not) come?

Hard to believe Calvin learned that at school.

Hobbes is right—science has taken much of the fun out of superstition.
Tomorrow’s strip: Calvin tells his parents, Dad makes a snarky, insulting remark, and Mom’s protest will be just a feeble “Dear” (I hope I’m wrong!)!!

I hate when that happens.

Predictive science is sort of a requirement for progress. I mean Albert Einstein was one of the best predictors of all.

There was a very similar strip to yesterday’s where the moon pulled a face at Calvin.
Calvin to Dad: I didn’t know the moon made faces.
Dad: That’s phases.

With that kind of vocabulary the school principal should be proud of Calvin.

I don’t know what grade he’s in, but I believe I learned about clouds in 5th grade. This was in the mid-60s.
