margueritem, you’re absolutely right! –Though I will admit to being served relatively tolerable tofu-burger by a vegetarian host on one occasion….

Actually, styrofoam is usually crunchier than tofu.

Fer Lefer a very bored Chinese peasant who had too many soy beans, too much time, and a tendency to over-complicate.

Tofu is supposed to be eaten in something because it doesn’t have much taste of its own. Believe me, there are many, many kinds and only 2 are edible on their own - the rest are nasty.

Joe, I’m betting you don’t like mesquite and palo verde beans either. ;) (I’m amazed to this day how plants of the bean family can grow into trees.)

No one said it better than a bagpiper I knew in San Francisco: “Tofu tastes pretty much like nothing at all.”

Really tofu is meant to absorb the flavors of what’s around it, much as styrofoam is meant to absorb the shocks of those around it.

One needs a bowl of blackeyed peas on New Years Day for Good Luck the entire year. a bit of Cabbage for money the entire year, with bacon, wonderful.

    I like blakeyes anytime, anyway.

No tofu of any sort in this house. Two of us are allergic to soy, I am so allergic I have had to give up most chocolate as it now contains soy lecitin… GRR! So I cook from scratch and use cocoa powder Soy is one of the top 10 allergens so why it is used in so many things is beyond me!

Tofu helper! There’s a marketing niche that’s strangely vacant. General Mills can have the product rights, but I want the residuals from the jokes.

Black-eyed peas taste great, but, like liver, they should be cooked by someone that has no sense of smell. I never tried mesquite beans when I lived with ‘em. Now I live where they think mesquite’s a potato chip flavor.

@Avolunteer, I am allergic to soy also. It is so hard to find things in the store that aren’t contaminated. Why is it so popular? It is cheap…

P.S. Most energy bars contain soy, but I found LaraBar to be an exception. They are all date based, with various additional nuts and fruits added.

I once expressed the opinion that tofu tasted like fried water. No one disagreed with me. But it’s not meant to be eaten alone.

E.g. mix it in (crumbled up) with eggs, add the appropriate vegetables and herbs and spices, and make an omelet. You’re not supposed to notice the tofu, neither in texture nor in taste: it’s supposed to blend with the rest of the dish.

I have had deep fried tofu in a Vietnamese restaurant, so, theoretically at least, it can be eaten and enjoyed by itself.

I suppose it absorbed the flavors of the cooking oils and seasonings.

I keep having this reoccurring nightmare where three anorexic girls want me to eat a tofu and spinach sandwich. I’m willing to eat the bread (even though it’s some real nasty type) and the spinach, but there is no way I’m eating that tofu!!!!

Wow, really? I love tofu. It took me years to get over the stereotype everyone here seems to have but once I did I found dozens of ways it was wonderful. People are really missing out.
