âAristotle said that since we donât know what death IS, thereâs no reason to be afraid of it. It might beâŠvery nice.â
â Tom Stoppard, Rosencrantz & Guildenstern are Dead
To die â to sleep,No more; and by a sleep to say we endThe heart-ache and the thousand natural shocksThat flesh is heir to: âtis a consummationDevoutly to be wishâd.
â William Shakespeare, Hamlet, Prince of Denmark
âTo die will be an awfully big adventure!â
â Sir James M. Barrie, Peter Pan
âDying is easy. Comedy is hard.â
â Sir Donald Wolfit (attributed)
âDo you think Death is a boat?â
âNo. Death is the ultimate negation; Death isnât. You canât ânot beâ on a boat.â
âIâve frequently not been on boats.â
âNo, what youâve been is ânot on boats.ââ
â Stoppard, supra.
Terry Pratchett once observed that dying is the one thing everybody has to do with no training, no practice, and no assistance from an experienced mentor, and yet (so far at least) everybody seems to do it successfully.
It was once established that the Grim Reaper has let Broomie live so long because she asks him out every time he shows up. Maybe sheâs worried that GR might be willing to take the risk next time.
Nobody seems to understand the cactus!! and youâre hurting its feelings! Itâs a person!
If you look at it closely, youâll see that youâre looking at the back of its head, which is why you can see its two ears and nose, but not its eyes or mouth. And itâs almost bald - it has exactly three long, curly hairs on its scalp.
And the flowers at the ends? Well, I think I did a good job explaining everything else, I canât be expected to be perfect, can i?

Maybe the cactus has been cast as Ophelia in the first all-vegetable production of Hamlet, and sheâs dressed for her Mad Scene. She dies in Act IV from over-watering.
Ah, but how do we know the chasm is deep? The drop might be no more than 3 feet or so. Maybe thatâs not a distant mountain range below them in the first panel, itâs just brown wrapping paper, crumpled up as a cushion to pad their landingâŠ

jml58 I donât think so. Sheâs Aunt Broomie to Nerwin.
tirnaaisling about 15 years ago
Is she worried that he is ignoring her again?
UncaAlby about 15 years ago
Actually, I expect Broomie would be worried about Death on a more â personal â level.
Like, you know, âHey Death, how ya doinâ? Howâs the family? Geez, you donât look so good, Iâm worried about you!â
UncaAlby about 15 years ago
After all â she said she was worried about Death â she didnât say a thing about Dying â

The cactus didnât really move. Itâs just much closer than the log and the âcameraâ point of view moved to the left. :-P

So since itâs a person, it has no difficulty in moving from one part of the drawing to anotherâŠ

It might help to not sit on an unsecured log over a deep chasm. Especially with cacti hopping up on it with you.
