They are blueprints. Look at them, they are carpenters. Their firm is preparing to build Endtown. We are back before the war. It only makes sense, a place like Endtown HAD to predate the end. Even Mallard wouldn’t have had the wherewithall to have built it all afterwards.
For personal reasons, I really hope the guy with the pipe is not a villain. I grew 19 inches taller since high school, and only gained thirty pounds in the 40 years while I was acquiring normal height. Of course I was barely 16 when I graduated high school.
“They appear to be so, but is it Endtown or a similar city, built a little higher for full sized people(p4 appears to show a ceiling). They imply many royals.”There’s no reference points so we have no sense of scale. There’s no way to know how far off the ceiling is. (“It looks like Endtown, it smells like Endtown…”)
I will wager one Internet that these two are some sort of extradimensional parallel to the horse and mole characters which Flask executed in the previous storyline.
It’s like reconstructing an entire movie from just one frame…but that’s not going to stop me from having fun trying, based on all that fun stuff we’ve already seen.
So…we’ve got a glimpse of two new characters and an implied third. They’re either not yet mutated—-which puts the story pre-apocalypse—-or they’re unmutated post-apocalypse people.
Talk about “our firm” and “our greatest project” and maybe even “money” suggest pre-apocalypse.
(Aside: we’ve seen characters spending money from time to time—-but what pre-apocalypse money would be valid post-apocalypse? I see Endtown printing its own money—-nice, neat bills, each denomination with a different picture of Mallard on it…)
But the streetlights—-they don’t look like the ones we see in Endtown. (Have I missed any) Is this the construction of Endtown? Or maybe it’s one of the other places—-we’ve heard some of Epsilon Beta or New Persia and seen a list of others…is it one of them?
Are these two guys—-or is it a guy and a pipe-smoking girl?—-anybody we’ve seen post-mutation?
And “the Duchess”—-royalty? No sign of it later. And she’s somebody these two guys (or whatever) are not proud of working for…
This construction job doesn’t seem to be connected with Apex—-at least, not yet…
It all makes sense. Endtown wasn’t built for mutants, but it was appropriated by them after the original owners became intimately involved with the landscape. The secret nature of the project explains why no one topside knows exactly where it is.
Sounds like the royal house may be fighting against itself. A War of the Roses? It’s defininately Endtown, I’d know that ceiling and those lampposts (see the pix of Aaron’s artwork on the forum that I commissioned – Wally and Holly under the lamppost) anywhere. Even the gridwork of the basements seems right. Looks like Aaron is setting up a new storyline with a little backstory. Different.
If it is Endtown, then it’s not “our” Endtown. There hasn’t been any reference to royals in “our” Endtown. Many posts above refer to similarities to “our” Endtown. But the tech that built Endtown would not all necessarily be secret or unique. Architecture and technology valid to build Endtown would be valid elsewhere. But possibly Endtown-that-was? Good idea in an above post on the possibility that these two would eventually be our Flaskorized Mole and Horse.

Wow, I didn’t even think about it until it was mentioned in the comments, but that very well could be Crawford and Mole. Maybe this is one of the many different realities of Endtown? It could be that Flask was sent to one of these realities to hopefully rebuild her life and help the people? And Veteran, good catch! I didn’t know that “Madam” referred to Duchess nor did I remember that Flask was called Madam when the Topsider snarked her. I’m not sure what’s happening just yet but I’m sure we’ll find out soon enough. ;)
My first thought was “What!” closely followed by “I already miss Holly and Wally. Granted we’ve already seen enough to surmise that the delightful duo will eventually get married and start a family, possibly with Flask’s soul inhabiting their first born. I suppose it’s safe to suggest that Mallard figures out how to use Aaron’s dittos to camouflage foraging parties and he may even have enough to share with other local communities. Hmmm…that still doesn’t explain what happened to Jake Jerkrabbit and his little band of malcontents.
My second thought was “Prequels are all the rage.” I’ve often wondered how Dr. Mallard managed to find such an ideal underground facility on what must have been short notice. Then it occurred to me that this might be just a hint of back story that will suggest some facet of Endtown’s underground facility that might not be known by the current inhabitants but could come to light in the not too distant future. This Dutchess sounds a bit shady, might this be some sort of super weapon or doomsday device? Still, given my success at predicting Aaron N’s plot twists you should feel free to treat the above with a grain of salt.
To SapphireWhat I noticed is the emphasis of the word. It is written differently from the others. That indicates this is something to look at. M name is Dame Judy Dench. Dame is the same word as Duchess in most other societies. The word Madam is from the French Madame which came from royalty. It was later used as a dig at royalty by calling all the common ladies of the time. Madame. The terms over the years change and drift. It is like the word Dame. In society terms royal standings a person of high standards and respect. Now go to 1920’s 30’s 40’ and so same the same word as Dame. Referred to girls just in general. " Man what a dame!" “Hey Guido bring that dame over here.”Over the years the word has changed but go back to the origins you can see it. AN has a great grasp of the language and seems to leave inuendos in the wording. Pictures are one thing but the turn of a phase, position and use of a single word can tell more than a picture. To DarwinskeeperI personally like Black Cavendish. Yours sounds like a fine 30 year old single malt. I cannot even imagine the flavor.

(developer, financier, director of operations, designer).Just things to sleep on tonight kiddies.
Here is also something I just looked up.Love the InternetUnder nobility ranks Duke or Duc in french is from Latin Dux meaning leader. Duchess is a female version of leader.Duke and Duchess. Children are listed as Prince and PrincessRefer back to the Disney bubbles. Nah It cant be that simple but……………..more to ponder.
But after more searching I have learned I am probably wrong on Madam. It appears to be more like Sir to the male. The only link is that when addressing a Duchess you use Madam as the formal greeting there is where I drew the wrong link. Not afraid to admit mistakes. That is why I have TWO erasers. One for Ink and one for pencil. The computer I can delete or back up to fix.
My two sents worth while I’m on lunch break; I doubt that there’s a connection between Flask and who this mysterious “Duchess” is. If they were the one and the same, why would she hide the location of Endtown while she was a topsider, presuming this is Endtown before WWIII. Veteran’s reference to the term “madam” might have been more an insulting remark than one of Honor since no Topsider would acknowledge an anthro’s human-ness, let alone any postion of prestige they may have held before changing. But I’ve been wrong before.
Mr_ShermanI did not mean the Madam was honor. I knew it was an insult it could be nothing else. It is in the intonation and use of the word in the circumstance. I can say “Sir step over here.” or use a stronger “SIR step over here” Both are respectful but the second one carries more force, more serious. The Topsider was being to the point. It basically said Checkmate sucker. End of Story, What do ya got to say about that b……h! To use more current lingo. He or she was being professionally emphatic. And who is to say if this is the SAME Endtown. If it was…… where are the houses? Remember the different levels of reality shown by Marx to Prof Mallard when he pulled the gum from nothing. Marx moved between those realities with his dimensional thingy. This could be a whole new reality. The other reality did seem to be in a rut. Topsiders scavenge and kill mutants. Mutants scavenge and hide from Topsiders. A vicious loop destined to continue till one side or the other is completely destroyed. It is the only solution, one side and the other fights until total armegeddon. Making peace? Topsiders suddenly changing years of intrenched anti mutant hostilities to all of a sudden hold hands and sing songs of unity? Never happen with them. The mutants come up and stand like peace lovers putting flowers in to the barrels of the Topsider weapons chanting songs of peace? Dust to Dust for the mutants. The word EMPASS comes to mind.Sure I miss Holly, Wally, Allee, Al and Gustine (How soon we forgot them in this last story) but since they are there can they be here?Dont give up hope. Just get ready for a new ride. And like I said. I was only making an educated guess. My opinion only. Someone posted last week that I know my stuff but do raise more questions. It is in my nature. Curious child. Even more curious adult.Peace be with you and yours.
So I guess this is the Origin of Endtown story. I like the idea—-when the curtain went up, way back, Endtown had been around for awhile, and it oughtta be interesting to see how it got to be what it is. I’d go with my gut instinct on it being that—-but you need only look at the postings I’ve made in the last couple of weeks to know how often my gut instincts mislead me.
But on Flask being “the Duchess”—-I’ve got to go along with those who say no. If she had, she’d’ve known all about Endtown all along—-and had it blown up well before she mutated.
(By the way, I thought that topsider who taunted Flask about the duplicate rockets has got to be the most evil person we’ve all yet encountered. Maybe this person was in the shots with the other topsiders right after—-with those suits on, who can tell?)
I think this is the beginning of Endtown. Now as far as dates, the word patronage comes to mind. They are working for (and looking to get) a stamp of approval from a King or Queen for their work. The styles of the “craftsmen” and the shape of the pipe would make me think of something around 1910 or so, along with the style of the lights. Hair style says more like 1800’s
For the underground, there are places in Poland or Germany (my mind slips right at the moment) that were mines that had whole churches and small towns built don in the mine (built around 1500).
As far as the street lamps, there are some underground facilities I have been privy to go to that instead of hanging lights in the ceiling, they would have street lamps. Easy to move and you do not need 50 foot plus scaffolding to get at the lights.
AGAINWhat about the walls in panel 4? Did they have walls like that in merry old England, Poland, Germany? THEY ARE SHIMMERING. Just saying look at the walls and remember the dittos encounterd by Al. Petey the transport was so scared of those things he fried them all. Different reality. Different Endtown. New story.
Oh GoodDoctorCopy the dodah man ehhhh.Grateful Dead SongTrucking…. got my chips cashed in…….,Keep trucking like the dodah manTogether more or less in line, just keep trucking on. R. Crumb poster. Circa 1968(Keep on Marchin must have been in school band)Just jabbing ya.I jab everyone at one time or another. Feel free to fire.Oh and welcome to Endtown
Oh and some notes for the Good Doctor.TSOJ still guards his ice cream and chocolates. He posts early and late. He is on Japan time.Sapphire is sooo nice and has cookies sometimes. Keeps me inline.I can just carry on and on making sense one minute then you can find me flat on the floor face first in the orchestra pit the next. One poster called me a roller coaster. Yep thats me to a T.Always smiling.
Y’know…I took the bulk of the characters of “Endtown” to be Americans…but, really, I can’t say anything about their accents from cartoon balloons. They’re speaking English, but Endtown could be somewhere under what used to be England or South Africa or Australia or Canada or some other primitive country where they speak English.
I guess I overlooked someplace called hillside. Would it be a side reference to the people living on the hill in the song “One Tin Soldier”? Just asking. I don’t know how many people will see this so close to midnight CST when the new strips are uploaded.BTW, when I see the lines overhead in the panels, I thought of rock strata, not dittoes or something like that.
“I guess I overlooked someplace called hillside.”Aaron has placed many of his previous webcomics in the fictional location of Hillside (in his radio show, Electromatic Radio, the settings include Hillside and Drakesville). The newspaper Sparkplug is reading in the Sept. 30, 2009 strip is the “Hillside Herald”. The ruins Sparkplug lived in were once part of a sprawling nation called “Hillside” (or so we’ve been told outside the comic). Endtown is located within Hillside’s original borders. So, the “Duchess” would either be part of Hillside’s older royal system, or a visiting royal originally from some other monarchy.

New story.

I hope Holly and Wally are just having a well-earned snuggle.
