Patrick: Groups of animals are referred to by different names. A "herd" of bison, a "gaggle"of geese... A "colony" of badgers
Wally: Badgers?? Rowf (x6)
Penny: Never say "badgers" in front of a dachshund!
Patrick: Or "bath" or "vet"!
Origin of the nameThe name âdachshundâ is of German origin and literally means âbadger dogâ, from Dachs (âbadgerâ) and Hund (âdogâ). The pronunciation varies widely in English: variations of the first and second syllables include /ËdÉËks-/, /ËdĂŠks-/, /ËdĂŠÊ-/ and /-hÊnt/, /-hÊnd/, /-Énd/. Although âdachshundâ is a German word, in modern German they are more commonly known by the name Dackel or, among hunters, Teckel. If dachshund were the common name in German, this word would be pronounced [ËdakshÊnt]. From Wikipedia
I notice that this strip seems to be featuring more and more of Wally. Sort of going the way of Peanuts (which focussed more and more on Snoopy over the years)? Not that I am complaining, I do love the Wally bits.

Same thing for my daughterâs Cairn Terrier â they go after badgers as well, even though they weigh all of 5 pounds soaking wet.

Geese are in gaggles only on the ground. In the air, they are a skein and a raft on the water. Badgers are also a sett, like otters.
