It’s subtle, but there’s an interesting contrast between the conversation in panels 2 and 3. “Moon Maid WAS a lovely young woman.” “Mysta IS very sweet.” Old name, what she was. New name, what she is. She’s lovely and sweet. She’s one and the same.
This is where I get nervous, is the Space Coupe still a super-weapon that can destroy an entire city? Will DT become nothing more than Space Cops on Earth? I really think this was a can of worms that never should have been reopened.
60sFan and Stipple immediately saw the point of panel 3. Dr. Sail is just bad. Perhaps talented, but definitely bad.….Spanner of the day: could there be more than one “Moon Maid” running around loose, so to speak?
He is going to steal a Space Coupe with the Mysta, the Lunar siblings, and Honeymoon in tow! When Mysta and the Lunar duo see their people gone and home gone, its gonna get tricky.
We’ve seen companies declared ownership of life-forms created in a laboratory (including cloned animals) – could Drs. Sail and Ghote try taking it to the next step, and claim they OWN Mysta? After all, they made her in a cloning experiment (or did they?). Could Bardoll be there to make sure she co-operates? Might Sail and Ghote offer to sell her to Diet Smith for…?And where is Sparkle? The plot thickens…
Of course, Dick Tracy lives in a time warp. Is this the first time we’ve seen a DOCTOR smoking in DT? What the sam hill kind of doctor smokes today?
Mikeyj: I agree that there were excesses in the Space Era. I’m hoping they can bring back Mysta as a character, but not the other stuff. We’ve gotten a hint of that over Christmas when we learned that the moon colony was abandoned. I hope that is Mike and Joe’s way of signaling just that – we’re getting the Moon Maid and not much more.
Yes, the heartache for Mysta is far from over. Discovering that Moon Valley is abandoned and destroyed, that she knows not the whereabouts of her parents, and that Sail has criminal intentions will be devastating. It’s not as if she hasn’t already had more than her portion of trials and tribulations. The bright spot in Mysta’s darkness will be Honeymoon. Love for daughter will balm the wounds, especially once Honeymoon gets the lowdown on her mother’s hair in her brush. Methinks this rich, rewarding tale has a lot of mileage left. What a summer this shall be.
I’d like to have a story (like Castaway) in which the wife was mistakenly declared dead and reappears after the husband has remarried. That, to me, is the hope of the current Dick Tracy story – though, I’m not at all sure that this is where Staton and Curtis are taking the story.
And with all the talk about clones and replicants, as well as those who wish the Space Era had never been mentioned in the sixties, let alone dug up and served once again, well, I see that this has generated intense feelings all around.
Can Mike and Joe create a story in which the husband is presented with his loved ones, past and present?
Even more, is Dick Tracy the place to explore these thoughts?
Probably not.
But I certainly hope that this is not a plot device, as some have suggested, to get rid of Honey along with her mother, Diet Smith, and the last remnants of the Space Era!
Being popular wasn’t enough to spare Mysta the first time around. And as numerous others have pointed out, this is Dick Tracy, and no character is too popular to keep from getting knocked off.
But it makes sense, what you said, that Mike and Joe would not want to offend fans they have been courting for almost a year now…
no, killing off Model Jones really hit home, too…..Chester G did a great job making her a really likeable and sympathetic character…..soooo….let’s clone her back, too….and drive Junior TOTALLY crazy, ha ha.

Great art in today’s installment. I love all that cigarette and cigar smoke. Very noir.

I know that complaining about the colorist is frowned upon. But just who is the idiot that thought that a blue mustache would look good on Diet?
