Doonesbury by Garry Trudeau for June 28, 2013
Transcript:
Rick: So you're taking your trophies... Jeff: Yeah. I know they're just cheapo dust catchers, but I'm kind of attached to them. It was so interesting growing up in the middle of the self-esteem movement! Rick: "Most Improved Trier, Second Grade." Jeff: I ties with the rest of the class.

I went to my great-grandsonâs graduations from pre-school and kindergarten. In both, every child received at least one award. Back in the old days, the only award of any kind we received before high school graduation was the reverse kind, not being sent to reform school.

It was the Lyman School for Boys.

Oh, I donât know, it seems to me that itâs the 1% that think theyâre entitled to everything since theyâre the âjob creatorsâ. The rest of us are too busy either working or looking for work that isnât actually being created.

It seems self-esteem trophies are more for the parentsâ consolation.

Of course, the absolute epitome of unshakeable self-esteem and utter lack of ability was Ed Wood, the creator of such classics as âPlan 9 From Outer Space.â

weâre still in the âself esteemâ age â but itâs strictly for the parents.I see children of every age and grade âgraduatingâ with real graduation ceremonies and robes â even kindergarden and 1st grade.
The kids donât really care â they just want to have fun, eat cake and play with their friends. They wonât remember any of this with a real memory, just flashbacks from pictures. it does nothing for themThe parents want this to feel better about themselves and their parenting skills and to somehow think âmy kid is specialâ but yes, he/she is â just like every other child in the world.

âI believe reality is that things are improving, despite the conservative doom and gloomâŠ.:-me agree with thee-Some folks simply HAVE TO HAVE some emergency to motivate them, even if they have to manufacture it. (enter sgt on cue)

" âevery child receiving at least one reward is a lot closer to the best way of doing thingsâ-âI got an A, that means I get $5. You got all Aâs, what do you get, David?ââYet another day without a beating.â(not that they really would have)-when the money stopped, so did he.Iâm still doing well enough.

Despite the self-esteem movement, or mean teachers and/or parents, or pretty much whatever, I think weâll make it somehow.

With the Supreme Court ruling, perhaps they eloped (there was always that âSam & Dianeâ vibe to those two).LOL

â(they know to keep a low profile), but theyâre not scrounging for bucks, either. They are a big part of the 1%.â
You beat me to it. The fact that they arenât plastered all over the media doesnât mean they donât have influence, it just means their influence is in no way monitored. They were certainly material in the unremitting de-regulation we have seen since the â80s.

Please. Those people contributed no more than the poor people who worked and died making them rich. Just because youâre the one who got the billion bucks doesnât mean you did a billion times more work than those that each got one dollar.

Hey, that also included cash.
