My niece always begged to stay when she visited me, but it would never have worked—it always took me (and my bank account) some time to recover. Kid’s visits are always best as a special (and not too frequent) treat. We always had more fun when the visits didn’t happen too often.
Nah, the best things about the two week summers with Grandma was the real info she would divulge about Mom and my Uncle. Turns out that Mom was not the Spotless Goody – Two Shoes she implied when she disapproved of what we had done. Can’t say that Mom lied, just that some things “fell though the cracks” in a 25-year old’s memory. :)
not even an arcade? you must be joking! I let my kid go swimming or to the beach or to the zoo with his friends (according to age) but an arcade, no thanx. I can see you telling Elly off if she HAD let him go to an arcade to spend money on the one-armed bandits and worse. That would surely amount to abuse.
We were a military family, so my children didn’t get to be around family much , so when we did, everyone kind of went overboard and took them everywhere, they didn’t ordinarily get to go. to. It was really hard for them to understand that if we lived there all the time their aunt probably would not run out to get the ice cream they liked when there was ice cream in the freezer. And they knew their mom wouldn’t do it. :)
we always got to go to grandparents for a week but we NEVER got to do anything special, it was just a way for my mom and dad to get rid of us for a week, but only 2 of us at a time, since there was 4 of us, so they still had 2 at home. I do NOT remember those summers fondly.
When my kids were younger and my husband and I talked about who would take care of them if something happened to us, he always said that his parents would. But then he started noticing that they would take naps while we were there (even as I did most of the work with the kids), and he reconsidered.
My mom and I visited her sister in North Carolina a few times. Her sister, who was a very negative person, had a boy a few years younger than I was. My mom was a terrific person, and the boy begged her to take him back to Florida with us. She explained that she couldn’t, that his mother needed him. Poor guy. I keep in touch with a lot of my other cousins, but he has disappeared into the woodwork.
I’ve always been non-athletic and a bit on the clumsy side, too. However, I got that from my dad’s side. Mom was quite the athlete – and could outgolf my dad any day. She was also captain of her football team (it was a very small class, but still), could play the piano, and type very quickly and accurately. One has to pursue one’s bliss elsewhere!

It’s great that Michael was able to go to visit his grandparents for such a lengthy visit. He’ll cherish these memories forever.

Love the Grandkids, but after the first hour I start aging very rapidly!

And see the giant aluminum crab! (it is in front of the museum that holds the planetarium).
