Only a tiny percentage of accidents are due to cell phone usage. 17 percent of all crashes are due to distracted driving, and only 17 percent of those are due to cell phone use, and only part of those are due to texting. 385 people died from cell phone use while driving in 2011; that’s a tiny number compared to all the accidents on the roadway. http://www.distraction.gov/download/811737.pdf My IPhone 5 does voice-to-text, so it’s even more convenient! Technology is the answer! And collectivism SUCKS!

Safety messages like this should be on time donated by networks during their most popular shows: traffic laws for motorists (including for bicyclists and motor-cyclists), safety rules to prevent accidents, and just basic social courtesy..They can be so entertaining and people-savvy as to not be dorky — little humorous mini-fables. The comedians that would tend to mock such things would themselves be asked to participate to forestall their ridicule. It would not be social engineering in a bad way..Schools programs usually don’t have the impact that social media have, or the numerous opportunities, and adults need to be reminded, too — the bigger the audience the better. It would be Public Service in the highest degree.

Rock on, Wiley… I once got rear-ended by a kid paying more attention to his cel than the road. Not much damage, thankfully. I swear in the 5 minutes it took for the police to arrive, that hopeless jackass made at least 4 more calls.

People have pulled out in the road in front of me several times with a cellphone in their hand, and I’ve had to slam on my brakes to avoid a collision. Some people shouldn’t be allowed to own those devices! Never owned one myself, don’t feel the need to be in constant contact with ANYONE 24/7!

I never go anywhere without seeing someone texting while trying to drive. Some think no one can see them, others don’t care. Have started hitting my horn every time they start wandering over all lanes. Only one realized it was him I meant to warn. The others have been oblivious.

I drove a school bus for five years. When you are paying cloister attention to other drivers around you because you must , because of your cargo you notice other drivers and their actions more. You try it. Just watch what other driversIs are doing.it is horribly frightening how many people are talking on the phone and texting while driving. It is common where I live, even if it is illegal.I am surprised that the numbers of accidents arestasticley so low.

When you are communicating to a person who is not present, you have to model that person and the conversation in your brain. This uses valuable processing power which should be devoted to driving. It’s simple: voices in your head and driving don’t mix, ever!

The National Safety Council updated its annual attributable risk estimate in 2011 using new data from National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The updated assessment estimates that at least 23 percent of all traffic crashes – or at least 1.3 million crashes – involve cell phone use per year. An estimated 1.2 million crashes each year involve drivers using cell phones for conversations and at least 100,000 additional crashes can be related to drivers who are texting. Cell phone conversations are involved in 12 times as many crashes as texting.

@Brian Ransom: care to say that in my presence? Seatbelted and all, I lost my sense of balance forever in ‘00 to a distracted driver (who hid his phone after impact, I’m guessing). I have a new grandchild and I cannot walk across the room holding him to go change his diaper—too great a chance I might fall, which I do often. I am only able to hold him sitting down. One stupid driver behind me and I get the life sentence. Thank you thank you thank you Wiley Miller.

Now if it were this easy in real life…..I know people who text while walking from one end of a room to the other…..and anyone else in the room just kind of clear a path for them. I see one day these “Twittering Fools” stepping of a curb into oncoming traffic.
