Prof, you remind me of the old lady who could always find something nice to say about everyone. When asked about the devil, she replied, “Well, at least he’s persistent.”
People, this is a cartoon (and a darn good one at that). Lucy is an exaggeration of such, and as such has some of the bad qualities of all of us, including myself. Take a good look at your own lives, and if the shoe fits or the mirror of the cartoon character sometimes reflects your own self, then if you do not like that particular character, then you know just who to change, now do you not?
There seems to have been a radical change in kids between when this comic was written and now. Nowadays most girls have a very low self esteem and are threatening to cut themselves :-(
I happen to like Lucy just the way she is. It’s not as though Charlie Brown is always likeable himself – think of all the times when Peppermint Patty asked him, “Do you think I’m beautiful, Chuck?”, and instead of replying, “Yes, of course” (as any courteous person would have done, regardless of what his subjective opinion really was), he’d mumble “Well, er, um, I —” (in other words, NO!!).
Why would people care what other people think about them? The only person I’m pleasing in my life is God and myself. Idc what anyone else says or thinks of me.
Some people are full of themselves and for some, there is some justification. Take Alexander the Great, for example. When he conquered Sparta he demanded that the Spartans erect a temple to his honor and worship him as a god.
When the citizens complained to the elders about the erection of the temple, they replied, “If Alexandr wants to be a god, we’ll let him be one.
I remember this story whenever someone thinks himself more important than he actually is.

Why am I suddenly hearing in my head…
“Remember, remember the fifth of November of gunpowder treason and plot. I know of no reason why the gun powder treason should ever be forgot.”

There are people in real life that act like Lucy. They NEVER hear themselves. I think they are happy the way they are and are their own best friend.

I go along with Russell. She is a charmer, when she wants to be. LOL.

If I were Charlie I would have asked this modified question: “Does it bother you to think that there may be people around who actually like you?”

Lucy has her good moments, but there are certainly days when she pushes it too far.
