Neighbor: Hi there!!
Janis: Um, hi!
Neighbor: I haven't seen you walk past here in a while!
Neighbor: But I see you walk past the corner down there 'most every day!
It’s a sad and fear-laden world when someone who is just being neighborly is automatically a “creep”. I see and notice many neighbors out for a walk daily. That doesn’t make me a predator. Or maybe in some readers’ minds, it does.
of course maybe the dude is just lonely and wants to make a connection with another person. maybe he’s a recent widower. we don’t know his story. Arlo and Janis like many folks IRL seem insulated from others even their kid. when’s the last time the strip had ANY other characters in it other than A&J and the cat?
Looks like the guy was probably just weeding his yard on the other side of the stone wall, so likely to be a resident, not a stalker. But Izzat a cellphone in his other hand or a trowel? Can’t tell.
It is his comment in the last panel that makes this seem less than completely innocent. It might still be nothing untoward, but it gives a little more cause for concern.
I didn’t realize Janis was in my neighborhood. She’s just met the guy next door to me. Since his wife died, I have taken to wearing camo whenever I’m out in the yard, just in case he wants a “visit”.
I run every other day, I notice what’s going on, if you’re out there your neighbors notice you, and where you go and what time and what you wear…..and second what PettyMower said for sure, who wouldn’t notice Janis? Besides neighbors like to let you know that they know what you’re doing sometimes, let you know they’re not missing anything, lol. Could be that’s all he’s doing.
Recently retired and missing people is how I see him. Can definitely freak you out but take time to figure him out. He wouldn’t have talked to her if he had bad intentions. He is standing in his own yard!

Um, no. That’s not flattering, that’s just plain creepy.

Noticing doesn’t make you creepy. Stopping them to let them know just how often you notice them definitely is.

Jeff— It looks like a pair of weed clippers to me.

I think the reason she doesn’t walk by there often is that she is avoiding him. — probably because he stops her to talk every time he spots her.

Dave53, @nighthawks has a point. Janis has always had a bizarrely shaped head (Gene too, Arlo not so much). Reminds me of an insect – maybe an ant.
