In panel 1 we see that Gunther has got over his panicky initial reaction to seeing Rosa in that teeny tiny bikini. In panel 2 Knute proves that he is a jerk. In panel 3 Gunther begins to Man Up.Fortunately, there is no panel 4, ‘cause we wouldn’t want see the Gunner get into trouble for having beat the stuffing out of Knute the Jerk.
Second thought and more serious: Sometime this week I fully expect Tiffany to come by and make a catty comment about Rosa and her winning the beauty contest against her a while back as a fluke.
I don’t recall seeing a diving board – Knute would need one to get that high. And, yeah, he kept his cap and his glasses on in spite of CABLOOSH that thoroughly wetted Rosa and Gunther.
you have to admit, Knute did get some great height on that cannon-ball…and Rosa looks great ‘wet’, Gunther, needs to chill out…..i think Rosa should push someone in the pool…
My pool doesn’t look like the water in the pool in this strip…Greg needs to practice drawing water…unless it was the colorist who put in too much black and wrong blue hues. I wouldn’t want to swim in there – not with Knute anyway.
For those who have been wondering just what it is that Rosa sees in a guy like Gunther, today’s strip offers a clue to what he offers her. Rosa is a disciplinarian, starting out even a swim party by laying down a bunch of rules. Gunther stand right beside her listening attentively, because he always obeys all the rules, to the letter. The nature of the Rosa-Gunther relationship can be summarized in two words: “Yes, dear.”
It is a pool party, everyone expects to get wet. There is nothing wrong with jumping in the pool. If they want to stay dry they should move away from the pool.
I’m not a lawyer, but I’ve been told by family members who are that there is no such thing as releasing pool owners from liability. Pools are what is called an ‘attractive nuisance’, so even if you fence one and post signs saying ‘no admittance without owner’, or ‘minors must be accompanied by parent’, if someone climbs the fence, jumps in and drowns — you are still liable. BUT having rules can give the pool owner a way to fight high damages in court. Also, home owner insurance tends to get cancelled faster for pool owners who don’t have fences and rules.
We live in the age of lawsuits, so it’s only realistic for people to try to protect themselves by setting up safety rules….
Hmmm, what about Ox? ^Well, that’s an eeeeassy fix!…. It requires a fishing line or strong tree branch with string, hook and and a box of donuts, or any Ox bait for lure… when you need him to move or leave, you have someone call to him, and lead him gradually to where you want him to move….
I don’t recall that we’ve seen the entire pool.^You’re right… with about five or so days left to go, it seems there’s time to stretch and maybe see the whole backyard…..
Forget about the "black water (incidentally for newpaper daily purposes/contrast) in today’s strip… I’m scared about the color of water there in “Donnyville”…..
I dunno. Gunther seems like exactly the sort of guy who’d work at Microsoft, or a similar computer company. Silicon valley in particular is full of Gunther clones.
Also, if you turn the heat way up, throw in some onions, carrots, celery, potato cubes, peas, green beans, stewed tomatoes, a little fresh basil, olive oil, salt and pepper to taste, and during the last 15 minutes add those nice little farfalle (bowtie) pasta^ Are you sure that wasn’t “Lake Papua New Guinea”?…
What have we seen in Gunther’s skill set (sewing, stacking books) that would lead us to predict he will be employed in a profession that pays 6 figures? He’s no engineering genius or anything, is he? He certainly doesn’t have the interpersonal skills to succeed at law, medicine, or business.
“Also, if you turn the heat way up, throw in some onions, carrots, celery, potato cubes, peas, green beans, stewed tomatoes, a little fresh basil, olive oil, salt and pepper to taste, and during the last 15 minutes add those nice little farfalle (bowtie) pasta…”We had a wood heated hot tub. My mom bought a bunch of those plastic vegetables and threw them in there. She said it was her missionary boiling pot.
At his very first negotiating session, Gunther would fold up like a wet tissue. Gunther: “My client is entitled to a $200K settlement…” Opposing Counsel: “We’ll give you $1000, but you’ll pay all court costs.” Gunther: “Gee, I dunno… Well, if you insist… OK.”
Yeah, he repeatedly hit him with his backpack while pretending not to, then when it came time to stand up to him face-to-face, he deferred to Ox. Gunther is not someone I would want as a business manager or lawyer.
I wanted to bring up that example, too, but it seemed that the argument to that would be what seismic brings up…=But still, that qualifies as standing up to someone… and having the brains to know when some extra assistance is needed… and even if Ox was just happening by, it shows that Gunther still had the courage to do it in the first place, and not necessarily even thinking about the possibility of retaliation from Les… more about the well being of Tiffany…
Perhaps if we see where Gunther will go to university (insert MIT here), then we’ll get a good idea of what his strengths are. Unfortunately, we already know what his weaknesses are (except for Rosa…seems his “weakness” for her has turned into pure gold). He appears to be comfortable standing next to her as she began to read the pool rules…and he stood up for both of them after Knute’s nutty mess…he’s getting better at this… ;)
he clearly, here, is demonstrating poor control of his temper...that is also what happened when he attacked les.knute is lucky gunther didnt bring his book loaded backpack to the pool party . . .or did he?
I don’t see it quite that way. Gunther is smart enough to know when to leave the physical stuff to the more capable.Yeah, it’s no weakness to let others take the limelight when it’s called for. Johnny Carson often acted as the straight man for his guests benefit. He won admiration from his guests and his viewers alike. He has been touted as one of the best comedians of all time. Takes wisdom to know when someone else can and should carry the load.
“Tip of the Weisberg” is definitely one album that I don’t have… have “High Risk”, “Rotations”, “Hurtwood Edge” (All good ones, I might add), but not this one… I just might have to go to my vinyl locations to acquire this one, thanks!…
I lived in Mexico for 20 years and raised my kids there. They spoke English first and it was the same for them when I put them in kinder, full on immersion — the best way to learn!

Parents who don’t set rules for use of pools are the ones who end up with lawsuits from parents of kids who get hurt, sadly
