Is Gil hoping this will cure Pop’s Alzheimers? I sure hope there’s some other point to all this. I wonder if there’s a stock “excited crowd” panel on file that can be re-used again.
I think Gil suspects the old guy doesn’t have dementia but instead is looking for attention. As for getting the gym for free, wait until what’s his name finds out — the school board member who wanted to slash teachers’ pensions. Drawing a blank here. Maybe I’m the one with Alzheimer’s.
I think this is just Gil’s way of giving the old man one last pleasure as he slips away. My mom had Alzheimer’s and did not know me her last few months. It’s not a good memory. This is a comic, but still a nice gesture.
No charge for the use of the gym. Get some kids to put up and take down the seating. There are still costs in opening up the school at off-hours.One other thing – where can I get a wrestling ring?
I can see it now, Gramps is down and GilPa from the top rope with an elbow drop, ala Macho Man Randy Savage. Herk moves at the last moment, Thorp feigns injury and finds himself in The Steiner Recliner……
I guess if I was one of Gil’s former students I would be willing to pay to see either a) Gil beating up some old man, or b) some old man kicking Gil’s *$$.
Kaz: In the north corner, local hero, in the sub shop and in our heart ,we have Herk the Mauler (boo, hiss, boooooo). In the south corner, we know him on the court and we know him on the diamond. We just don’t know him in the playdowns. He of big hands….BEAU DAAAANDY!
(Entering the ring): Moon: (looking at directly at Gil): Leeeeet’s get ready to FUMMMMMMBLE!!!!!
There will be a guest appearance by the best athlete in the world, a 14-time WORLD CHAMPION, the Nature Boy, Ric Flair, who will spin Gil over his head and throw him into Moonie’s lap. Followed by Bingo after they hose down the gym.
Why would you have a pro wrestling show in a place that is supposed to be used for sports? Seems like the auditorium would be better for a parody of what real wrestling is like.
Next summer’s story line: at the beginning of July Gil is going to paint his back fence. Then, for all of July and August, it’s nothing but 3 panels a day of fence as we watch it dry. Has this summer’s story beat.

. . . get the gym for free?
he . . . ’knows a guy who can get us the gym for free" . . . ?
so Gil is either A) making a facetious reference to himself or B) is rather low on the school ladder for being coach for most of the last millennium.

Please make this farce complete with Marty Moon getting involved as announcer or color commentator.

I suspect all of us who are still reading this story line (like me) are the ones who have lost our minds.

So the students are all going to pack the gym during summer vacation to watch a wrestling match? Not in real life, but of course here they will.

So, they are going to use the high school gym. I guess Milford doesn’t have a civic center.

I’m betting the shadow people show. They probably live in the gym. re yesterday’s strip—no political comments allowed.

Villain? I believe the correct term is “heel.”
