It really seems that both Margo Phelps and Bernice Halper could learn from each other… if only they could both learn to see how they could….

I have no idea how Bernice Halper is going to learn anything from Miss Phelps except what not to do.

.I think that is her aim.

Well, after these past two days, Miss Phelps doesn’t seem to be the shining example of a counselor, no… But she has been there long enough to know how to treat people, which Bern can learn, as gets testy, at times…. and also, maybe there’s more to the overall job (through good and bad examples she may experience with Miss Phelps) than Bern realizes…. – And maybe somehow Bern’s organizational skills can rub off on Miss Phelps, along with her ability to focus on things… and maybe they both could learn there’s more than one way to do something… that’s why I was saying they could learn from each other… maybe….

Eh, Bernice was a better counselor than Ms. Phelps BEFORE she had the idea of interning (even back way before Brad started working for moneys)!

Yeah, actually, on Luann’s Facebook page, Greg put up sarcastically, that yesterday’s strip showed Miss Phelps’ “sit up straight”, etc. was… real helpful… it does seem that GCs could be viewed with a little disdain….

I guess this is an example of George Bernard Shaw’sThose who can, do; those who can’t, teach.Prov. People who are able to do something well can do that thing for a living, while people who are not able to do anything that well make a living by teaching. (Used to disparage teachers. Hey, as a Baby Boomer I who teachers community college, I have been there, done that. I felt read good the other day when a nice, cute, young coed had that happen to her right in the middle of a two-part question she was asking. She forgot the second part, and I said, "welcome to what I go through all the time?! (lol) I still say give her a break. On the other hand Bernice has a nice, sharp, young mind, not too sharp one hopes.

“far too competent” A union is supposed to provide a consistent measurable product for a company, namely, a competent workforce that produces at a good rate. Rocket scientists, researchers, and business people are different. Bernice should think about that if she aspires for self-determination, creativity, and personal choice.

Focusing solely on the narrative in today’s comic, and not what the two characters look like: Ms. Phelps is defining counseling as ‘providing direction’.

Well, sometimes. And sometimes it’s about helping a person to find their own best solution to a problem, or deciding among hard choices – and, if the person is a student who is being abused or neglected, sometimes the counselor’s job is to identify resources that can help, even to the point of calling in the law.Ms. Phelps says ‘young people are lost, confused…’ Some of them are, and some of those outside of school who need counselors are lost and confused. But there are those who turn to counselors to sort out which alternatives to pick when they face many tough choices, and those are not lost people. Those are intelligent people who realize that they need someone who is not personally involved in their life to provide an unbiased viewpoint.

When the ‘gag’ kicks in, and Ms. Phelps gets lost in her own rhetoric, Bernice reminds her of where her pencil and notepad are. But Ms. Phelps was obviously reading from a pre-prepared list (something those of us who are aging have to resort to, from time to time, or we can forget the groceries we actually went to buy and instead come home with a cute puppy…)

So Bernice wasn’t really providing the ‘guidance’ that Phelps needed, since her question wasnt’ ‘where is my pencil?’, but ‘where was I?’ She was partway through the list of points she was offering to Bernice. From the sound of the first points, though, that list may not be very helpful to Bernice….

I think it’s possible, but Evans would have to turn things around from the way they have been going so far ^Yeah, and I don’t see this lasting more than a week, so he’s probably just running some gags (at Phelps’ expense), and advancing Bernice a little… it’s probably just a quick setup, and at some point in the future, it will probably just skip ahead to “routine” stuff from this, nothing to “sneeze at”, probably.

See prior boards for possible answers^I also offer: (1) the Chuck Cunningham effect (maybe not as quietly as ol’ CC, but nonetheless the same outcome)or(2) the plane had a brief layover in Hawaii, and he and Aaron Hill will soon have something in common: “Operation Volcano”….

Not so much to say about today’s strip, but I’m very curious as to where Greg/Karen is going with Ms. Phelps.

As for Bernice being a GC “intern,” I have some clarity on the subject, having inquired with the best person I know with 1st hand knowledge of the subject… my mother, a retired Asst. school superintendent on both coasts. She doesn’t read Luann, but I explained the situation we are discussing.

According to Mom, it is possible for a student like Bernice to interface with fellow students in a GC capacity, but always under the supervision and license of the GC. The GC is responsible for the student and puts their license on the line. The students can be trained as “peer counselors…” students who take direct sessions (alone) with the client student, in the hopes that the client student will be more candid with someone their own age than with an adult GC. Should the client student convey something to the peer counselor of a sensitive nature, it would be the responsibility of the peer counselor to report it to his/her supervisor GC, who would then follow the appropriate protocol. At this point, the peer counselor would most likely be taken out of the loop for that case. Mom also indicated that there are multiple levels of confidentiality and procedures for separating extremely sensitive HIPPA related info. from all other student/staff files. HIPPA sensitive info. would most likely never be kept in any file to which even some “adult staff” might have access to, much less a student intern. But, apparently, student interns are quite common and do a variety of things around the admin office, the Infirmary, lots of places.

I agree… and along with impatience, it could also be that some just took Luann and Quill’s hopeful plan as though it was etched in stone, and meant to be for September. And similar to what you said, a story doesn’t happen whenever we think it should, and it’s not like it has to happen right now! It’s good to just “marinate” on what’s happened so far, and not rush things…

Again, I point out that Quill will graduate from high school in Australia in 3 more months, a fact that seems not to have occurred to him (i.e., to Greg Evans) when he was proposing the scheme to return to Pitt for his senior year here.

    > It’s possible that Quill is in the process of transferring, but it may take a while, due to all kinds of bureaucratic red tape>But why in the world would he transfer, with 3 months left until graduation? If that happens, “Luann” will have to drop all pretense of any connection to reality.
