I used to get this same story from my mom and I can say truthfully that I seldom had to walk to school, mom usually took us but for school supplies we usually got notebook paper or tablets, pencil and or pen, with ink cartridges, crayons or colored pencils, ruler, scissors, and glue. We put it all in an old cigar box and kept it in our desk.

Now days not only do all of these things cost more but my grandkids have to have a ton of different colored folders, dividers, and such and I know that it cost about $75 per child and if you have 3 like my daughter it can get very expensive.
Well, that’s one big advantage to going to boarding school. All I had to do was go downstairs. Unfortunately, we never got snow days – but we got two weeks for Christmas.
My dad and his siblings actually did walk uphill both ways to school. The school was on a hill that went up down and back up and they lived on a street that was the same way.
Actually my walk from school was about 3 miles and was uphill both ways because the town I live in was hilly. Later on I rode a bike to and from school that was longer because I couldn’t take the shortest way but had to take a longer route. This was not an inconvenience to me but a privilege. My willingness to travel that distance by foot or bike allowed me to go to the store on my own to buy comic books and airplane models that used styrene cement to assemble.
reminds me of a Dennis the Menace cartoon…..Dennis and Mr. Wilson are walking in snow and Mr. Wilson says the same about walk to school with snow up to his knees and Dennis walking nest to him with snow up to his knees.
We had to take a school bus as we went past 2 other schools to the other side of town as that was where there was room for the kids from our development. There was an excitement to going out the first day of school to get supplies after school when you found out what was needed.
Niece started school about 7 years ago. There is a list of supplies for the grade on the website. Purchases are specified by brand and the kids have to bring in everything at once (no keeping the extra pencils at home) as the teacher collects it all and uses it for all the students so those who do not bring in supplies use the supplies of the other students. So sister in law buys the stuff, more than she can afford to spend. Then she finds out the teacher has a different list than the school’s list for the grade and she has to buy different stuff!!!

Backwards. On his hands. Carrying his brothers. Doing his homework with his toes. Fighting off wolves. Why doesn’t anyone believe him?

For a couple of years in Junior High, I walked across a very large, long cow field, with actual bulls in it sometimes. True!
