So they haven’t run into each other before…

I would have thought they have seen each other, not like meeting each other but maybe seeing each other around town, strange.

In the small space of time between yesterday’s strip and today’s, I hope they stuck Al’s tooth back into its socket. He could clean it by sucking it himself. Useful first aid tip.

Yep, people beating each other bloody over politics. Same ol’, same ol’.

They’re either indulging in cynicism or realism. It’s up to you to decide which.

Well, he’s not wearing a suit, so how come he’s still human?

The Apocalypse; either it’s all leather chaps and gangs of roving bandits, or it’s the last city on the edge of the world. Me, I like the former, because of ties. DOWN WITH NECKWARE!

Its not uncommon to not know folks even in a place like Endtown.Folks that have served on an aircraft carrier can identify with that. Over 6,000 serve on the really big ones. You can work in engineering and never know the ones working flight deck.And I was right about one thing. Going topside to run is a very dangerous difficult task to undertake. Like Wally said Endtown solved the water issues. Topside is probably devoid of most fresh water. Water is life. Live without food for weeks. Die in a few days without water.

The other thing is that I get the impression that Wally hasn’t been the most outgoing while he has been in Endtown.

Hey, we’ve been given an official timeline of sorts! 5 months since Wally’s introduction to the story (plus/minus a few days for trudging the surface with Lou and Allie).

If my totally fannish WAG on Amesworth radiation is even close to the answer, then the residual rads would “decay” water, preventing accumulations in the heavily dosed areas. But even without that speculation, the heavily dosed areas are thick with dust (that doesn’t seem to cake down) which would allow any rain fall to drain down out of reach. Any area that might become saturated would be just a mass of mud.

Wally’s water statement proves to me he’s a civil engineer. If he was an electrical engineer, his comment would have been about the lighting and energy problem that’s evidently solved also.

The “world” has ended many times and in many different places. Until the age of exploration, even the most educated people thought of the “world” as being just a a thousand miles across or more. They were vaugely aware of other lands but in same way today we might think of other planets. Ordinary people e.g. peasants or hunter-gatherers throught of the “world” as being only about 60 miles across.

It was easy for natural disaster to destroy the “entire world” in the eyes of many. Bronze age Greece, Myoen civilization, and the rest of the civilized mediterrainian fell to a massive volcanic eruption, an earthquake “storm” of successive massive earthquakes that lasted 50 years, and an invasion of the barbaric “Sea People.” It took 200 years for civilizations to rebuild to anything close to the previous era.

Violence and the urge to dominate and control our fellow humans is innate in genes, hardwired their by natural selection. Only relentless moral education and often practical material necessity keep the genetic behaviors supressed. The “end of the world” removes those constraints causing people to revert to their genetically primed behaviors.

People tend to be highly cooperative during short intense emergencies or in the face of constant external threats (either man made or natural). But once that pressure lessens, we become internally competative and less cooperative. Endtown’s success in creating a relatively safe environment ironically probably triggered this reversion to genetic behaviors.

Ah, yes… Those lovely school neckties…For five years of my life, I was educated by one of the strictest high schools in the Western Hemisphere.How strict, you ask?Both boys and girls had to wear the school tie. In fact, the best/only way to know which school each child was going to was by looking at their ties. Which, to some degree, was not so bad.But here’s the thing…You had to wear the tie “properly” at all times. They even have occasional inspections when students would have to line up and have the teachers look for anything out of the ordinary.And even if you were on your way home from school, you had to wear your tie (properly, of course) until you were actually inside your home.If, for example, you’re on your way home, and decided to take off/loosen your tie, and a teacher spotted you…May God have mercy on you. Because the Headmaster would not.

Re: Ties.There currently a very popular book, that has a necktie on the cover. The book implies my understanding the proper use of a necktie, but I have never read the book. When I was younger, I could calfrope an acquaintance in less than ten seconds, with her express consent, naturally.JusSayinErrata: Hanged, not Hung. Although some say the necktie implies. What then of the bowtie? Or the bolo? Neither of those are suitable for training underlings or associates.

Here’s a thought that would fit in the story about now. They go to Al & Gustine’s place. Gustine finds out Wally hasn’t done a THING to clean up the place. She chews him out for not doing anything. They all go over to Holly & Wally’s place where Gustine single-handedly throws the couch back into the living room. It would be funny to see a 700 pund rhino getting onto a cats face.

“The Topsiders won’t ever find you”?! Didn’t they come awfully close to bombing the right spot before? Wally should remember that.

The last time I wore a suit jacket was about two or three years ago, and that was for a memorial service…no tie…and the jacket wasn’t mine and didn’t fit right. I should really invest in a suit and tie and all that ‘cause I don’t know when or where I’ll need another one.#I would’ve thought “Wally is a civil engineer” from his description of building a school way back before mutating…my grandfather was a civil engineer; he built bridges (and Stewart Field in New York).

There’s been a few times when Aaron seemed to foreshadow events in the strip. I hope Wally’s , “The topsiders won’t EVER find you” isn’t such an event. The topsiders finding Endtown might unify the community, but at what cost?

I had a feeling these two would run into each other. Im relatively new to the comic but I think I see how things are going. Linda is going to the bridge and these guys are going to the driving force.

Now the only question is why are only males immune to the virus and did the topsiders figure out why?

There is a world of difference between radiologically “detectable” and “contaminated”. And levels of contamination versus individual exposure rates and all that get awfully subjective and complicated. But regarding the surface conditions, who knows how extensive the deeply dusted areas are? My impression is that the setting is somewhere in the middle of North America (or equivelent) so you’d have lots of fairly flat land with enough population to justify a fairly thurough saturation strike. I’d hope there would be areas that suffered less attention (the world’s total area is REALLY big, and it seems unlikely anyone would go to the trouble to make enough bombs to burn EVERYTHING) And I’m wondering about still unknown mutant survivor populations too isolated or unable or unwilling to reveal themselves.

Skimmed the comments so may have missed if anybody else saw the Vote Holly, Wally posters in the background.

Sept. 4th “Endtown” showed up in my e-mail set this morning along with the others, sent about 3:20 am Eastern…I don’t know what’s what, but goComics has been a little erratic of late…

Oh, by the way…Wally asks Albert if it’s a good time to go on a long mission, Albert mentions a “hit piece” Jake Jackrabbit wrote about him “last year,” and says if he could he’d be out of Endtown if other colonies would accept Gustine, but they’re biased against the “perpetually hungry”…and sums it up with a comment about being the sane one among maniacs makes one the crazy one…
