I learned that quickly in my thirties. I was always the one who invited people round for a meal, initiated get-togethers etc. When I stopped feeding and entertaining them, they stopped calling or coming round. I decided to wait and see if anyone rang up just to say hi. They didn’t. Moochers aren’t friends.
@bawana: There are countless true friends in this world. Sadly, sometimes it can be harder for people with wealth or talent to have genuine friends. And it can be very difficult for them to determine whether or not their friends are indeed genuine. Those who are poor by the world’s standards, lacking fame and fortune, are sometimes very rich when it comes to the people in their lives. Perhaps this is partly because those who don’t have a lot of fame or fortune or possessions to focus on, and who don’t have those things taking up a lot of their time, spend more time focusing on people and have more time to do so. Sometimes, simply focusing on others and spending time with them can become the beginning of a great friendship.Having enough money to live comfortably, but not so much that one is wealthy, can be one of the greatest blessings in this life.Another great blessing is being given the opportunity to be generous to others with whatever resources we do have, whether it be our money or simply our time and our friendship.
Yup. Typical conversation at my mother’s house ran in this wise:“Dave came over earlier.”“Oh? What did he want?”Because if he didn’t want something, he wouldn’t come around.

@EyjafjallajokullGood point. Why no contract for friends, but when you want to get married…
tirnaaisling about 11 years ago
I wonder if the same could be said for marriage? ‘If your partner is contractual, you don’t have one.’ _

I think I’d want to the ability to terminate that friendship in a moment’s notice without having to draw up legal documents to do it.
