SO, you're from Kansas City, huh, Roger?
yes. the one in Missouri.
There is more than one in Kansas city?
yes, there is a Kansas city, Kansas.
How come they didn't name yours "Missouri City'?
Because theres a Missouri City in Texas.
I always thought about that… Kansas City stretches into several counties, and both Kansas Cities are adjacent to one another, on either side of the Missouri/Kansas border…
Then, it’s funny that there are all of these Portlands, Augustas, Columbuses, Columbias, and in Maryland, there’s an unincorporated area called Texas…. and then there’s Salem, and the Ocean City in Md., NJ, Florida and Washington, and a whole other bunch of geographic curiosities….
I have cousins who grew up in Kansas City Mo. Their dad was an architect who worked on the restoration of the Harry S Truman farmhouse. When they went shopping, they would go across the river to the Overland Park mall. My aunt still lives in Kansas City, :-)
We sort of like this sort of confusion in Texas. Lockhart is in Caldwell County. But Caldwell is in Burleson County, and Burleson is in Tarrant and Johnson Counties. But you won’t find Johnson City there. It’s in Blanco County. Austin is in Travis County, a long way from Austin County. Houston is in Harris County, several counties south of Houston County. There’s no Deaf Smith to go with Deaf Smith County and no Cut and Shoot County to go with Cut and Shoot, Texas. But Gun Barrel City is in Henderson County, while Henderson is in Rusk County.
Glad you got to read it! I just reread it after a couple of years, and laughed all over again. . . . And Mr. Cosby didn’t know what he had on his hands, talking to her!
MeGoNow and others: There is a Moscow, TX, terminus of the Moscow, Camden, and St. Augustine railroad (which never made it to St. Augustine). There is a Bug Tussel, TX (finally agreed on spelling after there were three different ones in the town, unincorporated) in Fannin County (but no Fannin, TX. This isn’t nearly as bad as Arkansas, which has only one county with a county seat of the same name, but most with the county seat with the name of an adjacent county. Austin and Houston are the only ones in your list that are county seats.
By a fountain back in Rome I fell in love with youIn a small cafe in Athens You said you loved me tooAnd it was April in Paris when I first held you close to meRome, Georgia, Athens, Texas And Paris, Tennessee
A book on listening skills I had in my library gave the example of a truck dispatcher who sent a Maine-bound load to Oregon, or vice-versa – He stopped listening after “Portland”.
I won’t even recite all the ones in NY State – and there are a lot – after reading this encyclopedic commentary. But there is a book about the place names in NYS which tells where each name came from.

PA has an E. Texas and an Egypt. The King of Prussia has a town named after him also.

That was the case with Buffalo, Wyoming – not named after the local animal, but after a town father’s hometown in New York.

Here’s a weird one for all of you. Not only is there a Las Vegas New Mexico, its actually older than the more well known one in Nevada.
