Frazz by Jef Mallett for October 15, 2013
Transcript:
Caulfield: Hospitals in England make their doctors wear bow ties instead of regular ones and short sleeves instead of long ones. Frazz: Right. It prevents the spread of germs. Caulfield: I bet it prevents a certain amount of dating, too. Frazz: I'd rather my doctor wait until he's off the clock for that anyway. Mr. Spaetzle: What do you think, Frazz?

Bow ties and suspenders.

Well, there’s at least one British Doctor who thinks bow ties are cool. (Though to be fair, Gallifrey isn’t really part of Great Britain.)

I’m not sure how often you get to the comics these days, or which forums you might visit… so I’m leaving this on a couple of them…
Just in case you stop by….

The Doctor says, “Bow ties are COOL.” … Fezzes too, for that matter.

I’m fine if my doctor doesn’t wear a tie. And with short sleeves you might be able to see some of his/her tattoos.

He retired when he was told he couldn’t wear his scarf for hygiene reasons.

Well, the 12th Doctor will be hard pressed to come up withsomething cool. Being as how he will have a dark personality it will be hard.

I wondered why “Ducky” Mallard always wears a bow tie when he’s not in scrubs….

I think that the bowtie thing is foolish. A “regular” long tie is no more “germy” that the front of a button down shirt. Likewise, the short sleeve idea is foolish as well. Long sleeves are no different than the long sleeves on a doctors lab coat. I find it strange to think about England having such ludicrous rules. And, finally, I hope that Principal Spaetzel goes quickly back to his “regular” long tie. I think bowties are rather silly looking.

Amongst the doctors that have treated me the dress code seems rather casual. Many wear polo shirts, & a female doctor I saw one humid July afternoon wore a blue sundress & flip-flops.

There was a study done I think in Lancet, the British medical journal, that showed that long ties were a proven source of contamination as doctors went from patient to patient in the hospital.
