Not there at 3:00 am, there at 3:15 am. (All times Eastern.) Other than that…“boom!”

More like a potato gun. A bullet has the propellant attached. This is air pressure forcing them out.

Of course if the elevator stays at the top on the surface after Wally and Holly leave, it’ll be like a billboard to the Topsiders advertising “ENDTOWN IS HERE!”

If the chamber breaches the dust and leaves a hole (It has been previously shown that the chamber normally leaves no trace) that would be bad for Endtown. The Topsiders have probably been sniffing around. They must know the foraging parties to the ruins come from someplace within reasonable walking distance.

Who wants to do the math? I posted the drop data yesterday – if gravity and air resistance work the same as in our world, and Wally let go right after pulling the pin, the grenade would have gotten between 500 and 740 feet from the pod in the 7 seconds before blowing. Figure the same energy release as from 1 pound of thermite, contained within a non-compressable space 4 to 5 feet in diameter. Figure that air is compressible and that if the pod were removed, the energy would eventually be evenly distributed within the 1 mile length of the shaft without rupturing the lift doors or shaft wall liner. What would be the impact to the pod, and would it be enough to jelly the occupants?

Who thinks of these things??? I would never have thought of that…much less put it in a comic. Aaron, you are a GREAT storyteller!! Can’t wait to see where this is going………….

Here’s a related question. With a grenade, does the shockwave travel at the speed of sound? That is, if you’re standing far enough away from the blast (500 feet), will you hear the explosion before you feel the pressure wave? Because if the shockwave is traveling at the speed of sound, we can expect it to be going somewhere around 1100 feet/second (depending on air pressure and temperature in the shaft). Since the grenade will have traveled between 500 to 700 feet, there’d be about 1/2 to 3/4 seconds between the blast and when Holly and Wally feel it.

The image is refusing to fully load for me, so I’m only going by what others have said in the comments. It seems the pod has been propelled to the surface after all. This seems a bit silly to me, for the reasons I stated in yesterday’s comments, but I’m still glad that Wally and Holly have reached the surface and can continue their “mission” (=escape from Endtown).

Okay… Should the pod breach the surface, just how are they going to cover up the gaping hole of said shaft from eventual discovery of the Topsiders? An explosion of that force appearing at the surface might be enough of a giveaway to the Topsiders to warrant an investigation. I know they have the Dittos, but do they have enough of them to cover the hole, and have a remainder to be helpful for other purposes?

Oh yeah… There’s also dealing with the remains of the pod itself.

And how thick was the floor of that pod that Wally burned a hole with his wind-up raygun? I’m impressed.

Did anyone else notice that they are holding their “ears”? I’m guessing that is where the ear holes are in their skulls and that they learned to hold there to attenuate loud noises.

Of course the question now is…if the grenade is that powerful, why didn’t it just blow out the doors at the bottom of the shaft? Then again, maybe it did…

I maintain we do not have enough information about the design of the elevators or ATM tubes to make a definite determination of the physical properties of the transporter.I will stick with the ATM idea of a transporter, modified so that the air above the pod is displaced to raise the pressure below the pod. However, there would have to be a seal we haven’t seen to maintain air pressures and differentials for the pneumatic tubes to work. A vacuum seal, not a living creature. After the pod reaches nearly the top, there could be a grabber and hydraulic platform, to take the pod or pods up the last twenty feet. When the pods break the surface, they only make a little noise, as compared to the huge rush of air I would expect of a mile high column of air pushing a 3 foot diameter, weighted pod to the surface.JusSpeculatinRemember to keep voting. But it might be fun to have the pressure supplied by an army of seals, supervised by dolphins, running the elevators, living somewhere beyond the Endtown rivers.Or orcs, maybe Aaron figured out how to harness orc energy for the forces of good. Or evil, I admit to a manichean bias. JusAboutLosinIt

Wally still owns a Lucrainian Scavenger Ship somewhere. I don’t think we have seen the last of that ship he told to go anywhere. But could it recycle stuff into a balloon, or was that explosion rockets just missing the balloon as it blinked out. I think at least the ship still exists in this reality, but Aaron may be saving it for later, if at all.Vote. The links are above, or you can click on my profile for the links.JusSayin
