jz27wk: As a rule, I usually defend Slim as perhaps the last reasonable person remaining in this strip. But yesterday, when he decided the cat has to go, instead of the dog he never wanted, well, that was the end..The end of Gasoline Alley..Welcome to Giacamo Alley!.Though, I still think Dog-Zilla is a better name!
Lucky liked the previous person they gave him to too. But he came right back home after his visit was over. .Too bad Lucky didn’t bring luck to Slim and Clovia — in the form of someone who wanted Giocomo.
As a pet owner, I find this situation a bit unbelievable. First, dogs and cats can get along in the same household. It simply takes a bit of patience and time, neither of which have occurred here. Second, no pet owner that I know would give up their pet on the spot like this. It would be a very difficult, heart wrenching decision and not something lickety-split like this. So, while I like the characters, especially Joel, Rufus, and Coffee, but also Slim, Clovia, Lucky, and Giancomo, this aspect of dumping the cat is a bit frustrating and annoying.
This isn’t a done deal, folks. Look at Clovia’s face in the last panel. She is anything but thrilled and how often has Slim ever won an disagreement with her? I haven’t read Gasoline Alley in years, but I don’t recall him ever NOT backing down when she presses an argument.
Clovia looks pretty happy to me (panel 3). Besides, wasn’t she the one who first issued the ultimatum – they couldn’t keep both animals?.I remain surprised – and flabbergasted – that Slim would pick the animal he doesn’t like – and was used by Clovia to spy on him – over the cat..As noted above, giving up the dog was not an option, per se, because he doesn’t belong to them. BUT!.Whatever happened to putting him in a kennel – and sending the bill to the cheapskates in Europe?
