And if I’ve built this fortress around your heart,Encircled you in trenches and barbed wire,Then let me build a bridge, for I cannot fill the chasm,And let me set the battlements on fire.
As usual, Calvin’s live-in-the-moment philosophy comes back to bite him because he’s once again failed to think his impulsive actions through to their logical consequences. It’s what happens when you live for the moment and forget to keep one eye on the future, as Calvin always does.
Reminds me of a story about the inescapable prison—it was the person’s own thoughts, and had no openings, not for food (none was needed) or anything else.

The prisoner escaped anyway. And was no longer a prisoner

Sometimes when we build walls to keep ourselves safe we find out it is really a trap.

Walled forts have always been vulnerable to siege weapons, the snowball probably being among the first.
