I never owned a dog, but definitely good grief to Sally Brown’s “touched the dog; rewash your hands.”

He’s an adorable dog, but, you still have to wash your hands after petting. No offence, but … they do come covered in dirt and they tend to roll around in things you don’t wanna think about.

LOL! My cats must feel the same way about humans. Every time I pet them or hold them, they walk a bit away and then start cleaning themselves! (I’ve read that cats do this because they like to “taste” their humans the same way that mother cats taste their kittens when they clean them. Not sure I believe that…)

The worst one I remember in my case is, a friend’s mom was washing dishes in the sink. I stuck my fingers in her hot soapy water to clean off my fruit sticky fingers, and her mom got mad and said I ruined her dish water and she drained the whole thing and started over. I’ve never liked that woman since. And it happened over 50 years ago. And she is still alive, too.

@summerdogFriend’s mom sounds like a nut job. How do you “ruin” dish water?

The title panel refers to Leviticus Chapter 13 on dealing with leprosy:45 The leper who has the disease shall wear torn clothes and let the hair of his head hang loose, and he shall cover his upper lip and cry, ‘Unclean, unclean.’46 He shall remain unclean as long as he has the disease; he is unclean; he shall dwell alone in a habitation outside the camp.Snoopy is not repenting, but is expressing his feelings of being considered an outcast by Sally.

I’ve been petting my dogs before dinner and letting them lick me for decades. I’m still not dead and I’m extremely healthy. I honestly can’t even remember the last cold I had. In fact, there’s something to be said for getting dirty. It has actually been said it boosts your immune system, by introducing you to microbes. And additionally, items that kill ‘99%’ of the germs leave the strongest 1% to multiply! You’re not as clean as you thought, and your reasoning is the reason why we’re having so many problems with antibiotics these days!

True. What we think of today as “leprosy” referred to a number of skin diseases.

I’ve had lots of dogs over the years…shared my food with them, slept with them, walked them, taught them tricks, etc. I’m more afraid of getting sick from the chemicals we put on them than of any germs they might carry. I have never once gotten sick from a cat, dog or bird. One dog I had did get ringworm from….my husband!

Sally never heard the phrase that one can be “too clean”. Having antibodies from slight exposure, like vaccination, helps repel disease.

@hariseldon59 Agreed. This is my favorite Sunday strip with Snoopy. No matter how many times I see it, it always makes me laugh. The third to the last panel with “Bubonic Plague” Snoopy is absolutely hysterical!

Sigh. Sally needs to learn that there’s a huge difference between touching a strange animal and playing with your own pet.

I’ve been scratched by my cats more than I care to think about, but there’s no way I would handle a stray without leather gloves and a heavy jacket. I know mine don’t have rabies, but there’s no telling about a strange animal.
