The subjunctive would be invented only under certain conditions. But there was also the potential for the optative.

You guys already made all the comments I was going to make about the optative and such! I even wrote about it in my grammar blog (google Writing Rag) It’s a good thing I wrote the post before I looked at all your comments. The post will appear on the 28th.
