Doesnā€™t that also mean that Rick is about to become a great-grandfather? Step-kids count, yā€™know.

-I sent an email to his site, asking if he was true that his mother had passed away. I was told that it was true, and this is why the strip is in reruns right now.

I think my younger brother may be a great-grandfather by now. (Donā€™t know for sure; weā€™re not close.)

I can understand Trudeau taking a break. We are living in the Golden Age of the Obama presidency. There is nothing to criticize about it.

Iā€™m still perversely fascinated by the troll phenomenon, the same way I might be by a mass murderer or a bad auto accident. I just canā€™t imagine what itā€™s like to go through life so fizzing with partisan rabies that I have to invest a cynical political spin in everything I see. I canā€™t believe that these folks lead otherwise happy, satisfying lives. As I learned in my few attempts to actually talk with Sarge in both his incarnations, the urge to troll and self-awareness seem to be inversely related, so I canā€™t just ask the troll. Is anyone aware of any serious looks into the psychology of trolling?

TheWashingtonPost THIS JUST INā€”Trudeau puts daily ā€˜Doonesburyā€™ on long-term hiatus to work on renewed ā€˜Alpha Houseā€™: ā€˜Iā€™m ready for an extended breakā€™By Michael Cavna E-mail the writer

AT THIS POINT in Garry Trudeauā€™s career, John Goodman has just proved to be more irresistible a roommate than Zonker.

Hello, daily call sheet; goodbye for now, daily comics page.

Trudeau, whose TV show ā€œAlpha Houseā€ recently ended its debut season with strong viewership, got the good news: Amazon Studios has picked up his politically satiric program for a second season, the cartoonist and his syndicate are set to announce later this afternoon. Thatā€™s right: Fans will get to see more of Goodman and the gang portray four Republican senators who banter and bicker as Hill roomies.

But providing punch lines for Trudeauā€™s newest characters comes at a cost: As of Feb. 24, the daily ā€œDoonesburyā€ ā€” Trudeauā€™s Pulitzer Prize-winning comic strip ā€” will be put on long-term and open-ended hiatus, distributor Universal Uclick will announce.

Trudeau will continue to create new Sunday ā€œDoonesburyā€ strips; the rest of the week, readers will get reruns dating back to the featureā€™s syndication launch in 1970. More than 13,000 potential ā€œFlashbackā€ strips, Universal Uclick notes, havenā€™t been seen in a newspaper since their initial run.

ā€œIā€™ve done the strip for 43 years ā€” 45 if you include the college edition [at Yale] ā€” and Iā€™m ready for an extended break,ā€ Trudeau, 65, tells Comic Riffs.

In making the move, the New York-based cartoonist takes nothing for granted: ā€œA hiatus comes with uncertainty, of course: I canā€™t assume Iā€™ll be welcomed back a year or two from now.ā€

They donā€™t actually invest political spin in everything they see; they are quite adept in turning a blind eye to the nonsense from the right-wing noise machine.

I think itā€™s an unhappy fact of human nature that weā€™re less inclined to look with pleasure on whatā€™s good about our lives than we are to look resentfully on whatā€™s not so good. Overcoming that tendency is one of the keys to contentment.

And thatā€™s not to say that we shouldnā€™t always strive to improve our lot, both individually and collectively. But perspective, people, perspective.

A facetious take on anyone who would criticize GTā€™s thinking that his motherā€™s death warranted time off. Not directed at you.

Your right to ā€œfreedom of speechā€ means the GOVERNMENT cannot suppress or punish your speech. GoComics and other posters are not the government.
