email for more details.
The basis for the line was Governor Palin’s September 11 2008 appearance on ABC News, her first major interview after being tapped as the vice-presidential nominee. During that appearance, interviewer Charles Gibson asked her what insight she had gained from living so close to Russia, and she responded: “They’re our next-door neighbors, and you can actually see Russia from land here in Alaska, from an island in Alaska.”
Actually she never said it. It was a skit on Saturday Night Live with Tina Fey. Whether SP is that geographically ignorant is anyone’s guess. We are all so eager to believe it because of her other preposterous statements. She’s a tough one to satirize effectively because she does such a fine job of it herself.
What she actually said when interviewer Charles Gibson asked her what insight she had gained from living so close to Russia, and she responded: “They’re our next-door neighbors, and you can actually see Russia from land here in Alaska, from an island in Alaska”
She was attempting to use this as her Bona Fides that this is how she gets and understanding of foreign diplomacy.
“Or does she have to say it because her audience really is stupid?”
We are talking about the American Public here, so the answer may be yes. I will bet that there is a good part of the population that doesn’t know where Alaska is and some who don’t know it is a US State.
Actually one can see Russia from Alaska. Not Moscow, but Russia. I can see 7 states from the top of Lookout Mountain here. So she was correct. People who never travel even int US are ignorant!
Americans are so cute and ignorant. Russia is the largest country on EARTH. Alaska is close (relatively) to the northwest corner. Sochi is in the southeast. DUH! Unless Sarah has relocated to the country of Georgia or is in Romania looking across the Black Sea, she isn’t seeing much.
Commentary on Palin shows the exact level of knowledge that is attributed to Palin, but it exists in those whose claim to superior knowledge is never questioned. But that hardly matters. Her apparent claim to expertise on foreign policy because she can see Russia from her house is now common knowledge and a fact of life among those who are properly informed, may God have mercy upon our souls.
This discussion reminds me of why I quit looking at certain political cartoons. Please will all of you go back to your political discussions elsewhere and let the rest of us enjoy comic strips.

Yep, Tina Fey
If you are going after someone, best to attack what they ACTUALLY said or did rather than act as if the only way is to make stuff up.

The real joke is on those who ridicule Gov. Palin and don’t know that in some place in Alaska you can actually see Russia.
