Every marriage is different. My mom and dad always told each other when someone had hit on them (they’re still alive, just no longer at an age when they get hit on alot), they thought it was hilarious and neither felt threatened. Some marriages are like that, some aren’t. As long as it works and both people are happy, yes?
There’s a reason for her to work and have her own money. "if she wants John to pay the bills for her next trip . . " Sounds like she has to ask permission to have a life away from slaving for the man and kids.
I’m guessing the same rationalization for howtheduck saying "Plus Elly shouldn’t be dropping any hints with her talk of traveling alone and meeting new people, if she wants John to pay the bills for her next trip to go travel “alone” and get away from the family. "
Too bad he completely missed that Elly went because someone else could not and the tickets, hotel and conference were paid for by the library, not John.
-doubtful that the library will be so generous in the future. In fact, they may decide to can Elly-And upon what facts do you base this, alleged ‘Rebel’? Is this based on the ‘fact’ that Elly didn’t tell her ‘man’ that of course she didn’t compare him to anyone else?-I too thought this was a strange question for a secure man to ask his wife, unless he had been busy comparing her to others while she was away and was feeling some guilt.-And I also thought this was a positive strip showing a decent relationship between two people who cared for each other (at least at this point in their lives). But the Ellyhaters can’t let a day go by without snarking at Elly and Debbydowning other reader’s days…
I don’t read insecurity in that at all. Like mischugenah said above, every marriage is different. My wife and I still have conversations of this sort after 25 years together. We also both know the type of person the other likes to ogle and will even point out prospective eye candy to the other. We’ll also mention when someone else flirts with us (not very often anymore). We are both entirely secure in our relationship and have fun sharing and laughing about such things.
I’m of an age when I can be cheekily outrageous and flirty with the young things that serve me. It gives me entertainment. I will give an exaggerated compliment and hope it gives them a perk me up. If not, . . . well, I’ve been off base before.
Yes, heaven forbid one should be truthful in a marriage. And truthful in a way which lets your spouse know how much he is appreciated. What IS this world coming to?
I remember an episode of “Growing Pains” where Mom got upset at Dad because he took a marriage quiz and checked “Yes.” for a question about not telling a spouse something that would upset them. She felt that was dishonest. He informed her that he knew a buddy of his had hit on her after a few too many beers at a barbeque and she hadn’t told him, buddy confessed and apologized after he sobered up.

I always thought it was nice that Lynn showed John and Elly together in bed discussing their days… ;)

Looks like they are not fighting or making mean remarks at each other.

“Did you compare me to anybody” is a really, really weird question to ask your spouse. It SCREAMS insecurity.

That’s cause most of the people she met were women!

If it was John who had gone away and Elly asked him the same thing, he would have said something really snarky in reply to that question.
