Ms. Johnson, if you happen to read this, I think the USA and Canada have a long, long border between us, and it is the most peaceful border on the planet. Why can’t the rest of the world act like us?
There is an elderly widow at our church. She has one sister. She had a son, who died young, leaving a childless widow. Her health started to decline. At that point we had our daughters, and they adored her. About the same time the girls started calling her “Nana”, her health started to improve. It’s been about 7 years since then, and “Nana” is still with us and a beloved part of our family.
The forgoing comments(last 4 mainly) bring to mind the way I was raised—be respectful and treat elderly people like they are a part of the family regardless of their actual relationship with you family. Happy Easter to all(or Passover) as the case maybe following in His footsteps.
some times we forget that not only do children need adoption but it is a good thing for lonely elderly folks. My dad is 90 and I think the best/worst thing that he ever did was move into a senior living complex. No one to associate with but other old folks makes you feel old.
I have many local friends and activities but I still like always being the neighborhood grandma. I feel that I’ve been adopted by generations of neighborhood kiddos who bring me their drawings (and have come to sing a little song when I return from a vacation). I have 4 children and 6 grandkids, but none currently live close and I will always have patience with the little ones as much as I can (good for all of us).
N7326 Foxtrot: Once did. Now you need an expensive passport and a lot of other bother. Not like when I could pop over to Blaine and replenish my supply of tortillas. [Are you really an aircraft?].USN1977: Everyone needs a Designated Neutral. Switzerland is a bunch of nations anyway, with four official languages (one is the first language of only 1% of the population) and uses a fifth to identify their country on their postage stamps. A country that can do that within their own borders can get along with anyone.
Switzerland is a peaceful place in part because the Swiss are well-prepared for war and natural disasters. All the men of Switzerland do military service and all the women undergo civil defense training. There is a rifle in every house, but little violent crime.
USN1977: Rifle in every house: Assault rifle at that. It is government issue, along with the uniform and 20 rounds – and one better be able to account for each and every item.
When we were kids, our parents sang in the choir and sat up front in the loft, so my brother & I sat with an elderly widow during church and we started calling her our “adopted Grandma”

That’s beautiful! Mike and Lizzie’s sensitivity is right on target. Children can sense things that sometimes some adults are totally clueless about.

This Sunday strip, originally run in 1985, has a reference to CABBAGE PATCH KIDS dolls.

It shouldn’t just be at Easter. Chosen families are strong in many ways and are a blessing to all.
