I don’t know Calvin, you’re always making mini-disasters when you’re around Susie…that’s not playing alone! Perhaps you’re scared that you’ll make a fool out of yourself because you don’t know the first thing about softball? ;)
It’s not a tie, it’s a noose. For years I watched my dad come home from work and take off his suit and tie, and I vowed I would never have a job like that. And I never have. I have never had a job where I had to wear a tie.
Considering the appalling behavior of some parents (and coaches on occasion) at Little League, recreational league, or even tee ball games, I’m not sure sportsmanship and other character-building ideals are consistently achievable any more…
Go Calvin!! (I hate sports. Hated them in school. Hate them more now since I’m supposed to give a rat’s posterior about some over-paid, drug addicted street thug who can convey a ball from one place to another better than the other guy….)
I too grew up as an only child and love my alone time. I have no problems socializing, but I relish the quiet and free time with my thoughts and the time to do what I wish.
For once and for all: Sports DO NOT teach sportsmanship or team spirit. Once upon a time in Andy Hardy-land, maybe. Today sports, or more correctly the adults associated with them, teach ruthless competitiveness, even among teammates, as a way of life and the path to success; and can turn children into empathy-less narcissists. PARENTS raise children, like it or not, and they should stop looking for free passes. Done now.
Really hard to refute much of Calvin’s argument, although you CAN have fun by yourself as an adult…after you retire, if life hasn’t beaten you into a quivering mass of gooseflesh by then.
Hmmm, the need to interact and cooperate with others isn’t confined to sports. Calvin isn’t an introvert so much as a narcissist who wants the world to be about him and only him.

I thought Calvin signed up for recess baseball, not recess softball. I’m confused… :)

Calvin doesn’t want to learn, period. In some respects I was the same, but I loved playing team sports like softball.

Yes on both counts. Dad’s philosophical realization is obvious in his facial expression. He’s looking at things in a new light.
And Calvin is my hero.
