Assuming the second baseman caught the line drive and doubled off the runner, he is running and facing the wrong way. Unless, that is, he very daintily reached back with his right toe to touch the base.
The second baseman is so excited to turn two he has broken out into an interpretive dance. Is Wendy impressed? Did his wardrobe malfunction? We demand answers.
I would’ve thought there might be a rain delay after seeing the ugly storm cloud in P2. Since it is obscuring the outfield fence, I’d think that locating the ball could be a problem.
As The Milford 9 take one on the chin from the Tilden Tutwilers, Wildcat Maris observes the action from his penthouse suite at Maris Industries behind the right field fence. Lucky has the right attitude. The kid is likable and should keep the Mudlarks loose as the season progresses.
Like you, I’ve been a fan of Thorp for a long time (1957, age 7), and agree it has held up through the years. Until the ‘net, it was gone from me for a long time,so I’ve appreciated the last few years. As to the focus on the artwork, I think our daily immersion in sports and what hi-def/slo-mo/giant-screens can show us has filtered down to comic strips. It ALL has to look real, all the time. With the space constraints of a panel, it is hard to get 3D bb action to look right, and I laugh along with the rest of you. I agree that the core of what Gil has meant throughout the years remains, but dammit, I just want ONE state title in my lifetime. If another strip is going to kill Archie Andrews off, can’t a state title for Gil ( I don’t care if it is in girl’s tetherball) somehow happen?
I certainly haven’t been around as long as some of you, but I’ve also read for quite some time. To get some of the older history, I had to do some searching. Didn’t realize that Mimi wasn’t the original love of Gil’s life.
For you guys that don’t remember all of the history, here is what Sports Illustrated posted back in the mid-80’s. http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/vault/article/magazine/MAG1121845/1/index.htm
In all reality, cardinal rule for base runners always be able to get back to the bag and make sure the ball is going thru before breaking for the next base per Jimmy Piersal.
Big news Thorp fans! Or at least Mopped Up Thorp fans. The dungeon storyline needs to be resolved, so I will be doing what Whigham and Rubin won’t do – a Sunday strip! I originally thought it would be a one shot deal, but while starting on this week’s it was apparent I couldn’t do it in one shot without making it at least 15 panels long. In fact I think it will end up being a 3 week run. It all depends what happens in part 2, which I haven’t entirely figured out yet. I’m excited and hoping this is worthwhile. I’ll repost this tomorrow and Saturday so you’ll know to check in on Sunday.
@ Bluedarter and Goshen: also a fan since my newspaper carrier days…….first thing I looked at when I picked up the papers on the corner in 1961. But yes, please…….just one state title……..even in cornhole.

This game action is not helping to move the Mopped Up Thorp storyline forward.
