Frazz by Jef Mallett for April 25, 2014
Transcript:
Girl: When you enter a race, they give you a medal for finishing, right? When do we get swag just for finishing? Mr. Burke: As soon as you start paying the same kind of entry fees for tests and exams. Girl: I learned something interesting colleges do. Frazz: No, you didn't.

Teachers don’t earn much. And they have to supply the stickers and extras themselves

I don’t get your point. Aren’t those government owned colleges precisely the ones that offer the most reasonable tuitions to in-state students?

You get a diploma if you finish. Our local university newspaper just proudly reported that 500 (!) of this years couple of thousand graduates got thru in four years. Not sure if this extended college experience is a result of expenses (students are working to pay) or student laziness, that prevents them from taking a full schedule.

YA left out the part where those anti-government folks suddenly LOVE the gov’t— right after it passed some legislation that benefits THEM FINANCIALLY…

Frazz has some way of knowing about the exchange in the previous panels, so he’s saying that although race organizers give awards generously because they’ve collected fees, colleges do collect fees but don’t give out awards for just finishing your work. You have to do your work well, and on time, just like in grade school. (Unless you’re a star athlete, of course.

The US isn’t a republic; or a democracy, but everyone knows that. It’s an oligarchy and has been for some time now. These people aren’t the first to point that out, either.

Load of bs. Try understanding/listening to your opponent before you criticize them.

““government” is a bad word, used to describe the “horrible monster” they fear – and hate, EXCEPT when that same “horrible monster” passes laws, rules, and regulations that prevent others from enjoying rights and freedoms that the ANTI-whatever claque insist belong to THEM. "
I agree with everything you said. I must add that you missed the clause about “prevents others from enjoying rights and freedoms that THEY think are WRONG, based on their particular narrow interpretation of old books.”

Does she think everyone who finished the Boston Marathon got a medal?

Teacher pay…Start in a good district, low 30’s…After Ten or twelve years of service, you can get into the low 50’s. With a Master’s degree, + 15 credit hours in your subject area, you’re flirting with 70 thousand…You have to take 3 credit hours every three years to get any pay raise….But that’s kind of academic, because if you don’t have a Master’s degree, you won’t get much above 45 K…..This is in Michigan. Every place is different, but mostly to the same type of scale…The statement

This statement about teaching is absolutely true. “You won’t get rich, but it’s a pretty good job.” When you figure in the insurance and pension, it’s not a bad gig at all..And yes, at the end of the day you can justly say you spent your day trying to help people and society in general. That is a good feeling……..However, let’s talk about how difficult, time consuming and costly it is to be a good teacher at a later date….
