Waterbeds were all the rage in the ’80s, so we bought one. It was a miserable thing. The heater was defective, so the mattress was often clammy and cold. Putting the sheets on took practice. We had to pull up the edge of the mattress, then work a band of elastic under this blubbery, rolling water-filled sack while skinning our knuckles on the frame. It occurred to me that it was kind of like dressing something warm, large, and flabby!
Oh my Lynn’s comments bring back the memories. We had a waterbed in the mid 80’s too. Like Lynn, our heater was defective…yikes it was cold most of the time. And it was a war putting on the sheets. This is hilarious….though I’m thinking John is in big trouble. LOL
My sister/husband has now two dogs and cat but have a waterbed long before pets came in married for 30 years and still have a waterbed and like their waterbed. My sister insists her small dog sleep with her in their waterbed.
I had a king sized waterbed for years (got rid of it when I got married because my wife was seasick-prone), and I remember one December night in particular. We’d run out of oil for the heat and the temp dropped to 8F, so I had ice forming INSIDE my bedroom window. I was SO glad to have that waterbed…until I had to get up for work.
One who values his partner more than his need to be funny?
I’ve known guys who could never “resist an opening” – they constantly made their partners the butt of their jokes and then could not understand why she left.
Definitely not smart on John’s part, but it was a full-blown comic-strip chortle, and that doesn’t happen very often. Now if I could just figure out why she’s trying on a bathing suit on a Monday morning . . .
We too had a waterbed in the 80’s and 90’s. The heater worked well and it was snuggly warm in the winter and kept us cool in the summer. The only reason we gave it up was our age and condition of the spinal columns, although I will admit it took a bit of skill to get those sheets on.
My wife and I learned a long time ago that the most comfortable bed is a 4" foam mattress on a board (although we’ve never tried a waterbed). Yes, like you get at summer camp. We could never understand why people keep spending $1000s on complex uncomfortable junk.
I had a waterbed for about 10 years by the time I got married; we just went out and got a bigger waterbed. It was great for about the first 17 years; but recently, when the second water mattress sprung a major leak, my wife latched onto a Sleep Number number an acquaintance was dumping. My side has a major air leak in it; it manages to keep ahead of our attempts to patch it. And I can guarantee you it doesn’t keep me warm in the winter when the power fails, as our original waterbed did for close to four days the first winter we were married when a huge snowstorm killed the power in my neighborhood for that long.

Waterbed + apartment + 2 cats = recipe for disaster (not from me, but a friend’s experience)

Sure, he talks that way now. Wait until she wants help OUT of the bathing suit. He’ll be singing a different tune then!

We replaced our Tempurpedic with a waterbed two years ago. Couldn’t be happier.

I bought a water bed in 1983. Replaced the mattress around 1998. Sold it 2010. … yes someone actually bought it.

The man whose sofa is more comfortable than his bed. He obviously loves sleeping there because with comments like that he will sleep there a lot.
