Joanie: Girls, I'd like to talk to you about growing up to be mommies. Growing up to be a mommy is one of the most wonderful things a little girl can want to do, but... there are other things in life she can do as well... For instance, she can work her head off and show all those arrogant boys that she's just as capable and intelligent and creative as any little stud around! Girl: You're a "libbie," aren't you, Ms. Caucus. Joanie: You bet, honey.

And she still has to talk to young girls about their misconceptions of getting older.

I was 17, hitchhiking, sitting in a truck stop, reading Bound for Glory by Woody Guthrie, looking over a newspaper when I saw this comic in 1972. I remember where I was when I saw this comic! It made me laugh. Right on!

There is something wrong with “work your head off” but I can’t quite put it into words.

@leftwingpatriot: Thank you! Wow, it just shows how time flies and now she’s a great grandmother.

What happened to “Darn Tootin’” at the end? Did Garry think today’s readers wouldn’t understand that? :P

Must be easier to draw standing kids. They tend to sit in a circle, not stand.

I think that’s the point. Notice that she said “work your head off.” But if a woman pays the same dues as a man, and is as smart and as capable, then they should have an equal shot at a job and get paid the same money. Equal means equal chance to succeed … or fail. But if they do the job they should be paid the same.

And of course, the glass ceiling was even more in effect than it is now. That is, it was often official policy in companies, rather than something that “just happens” due to inertia.

“I mean yes, us “WASP men” have an attitude, but we earned it- 99 percent of the time it was not “given” to us.”
Did you grow up black and impoverished (with “bawana” for a handle, I would think not)? Unless you did, chances are really good you had something “given” to you. It never ceases to amaze me how people credit to their own doing that which society/their station in life (what an ugly term!) has given them.ladykat over 10 years ago
The late Charlotte Whitton (mayor of Ottawa) once said: “Women have to work twice as hard as men to be thought half as good. Fortunately, this is not difficult.”

She may be a “libbie”, but she’s a lousy “mommy”.

Not to mention that you earned it by kissing a lot of rear ends and exploiting those “under” you.

@tmoverbeckHere is the original strip from Gocomics:-http://www.gocomics.com/doonesbury/1972/10/12-
If you have a hard copy version of the original with “darn tootin,” then it is Gocomics that made the change.

What about all the little boys who didn’t say “I want to be a Dad when I grow up”? Liberal ideas are fine, but we need Moms and Dads you know.

Only difference is that in those days, we could proudly say it.
