Peter: Pumpkin chunks...peas...tomato wedges...lima beans...diced eggplant...um, this is really, really, really, not what I had in mind.
Andy: You asked for fruit salad! Biologically, those are fruits!
Not the type of fruit salad I’d not wanna eat either… specially with tomato since I don’t like those (I did try to make a Thai curry with eggplant about a month ago, though, but it didn’t turn out well).
the definition of ‘fruit’ is the edible fleshy pod of a seed bearing plant peas and lima beans are not fruit. pea pods are edible but they are not fleshy.
There was a meal in “C” rations of the 1960s called, “Ham and Lima Beans.” It was commonly known among GIs as, “Ham and Mothas” or, “Ham and M____rf____rs.” Some said they would fight over them. Me, I would fight not to have ’em.
The only ones she got right here is the tomato wedges and the eggplant. The eggplant I can see. Tomatoes aren’t exactly the sort of thing you’d commonly see in a fruit salad, but isn’t too much of a stretch. The rest is a no-go. Pumpkin’s more of a gourd and not really best used in this way (IMO, at least) and the peas and lima beans aren’t, strictly speaking, fruit at all.
FWIW, the correct botanical definition of a fruit is the tissue from the mother plant that surrounds the seeds. It makes up a structure that is called the carpel/ovaries. There are a few exceptions to this where accessory structures become culinary fruits, e.g., apples and strawberries. Fruits do not have to be fleshy. There are dry fruits too, like sunflower “seeds” before you remove the “shell.” Technically, the shell is a dry fruit called an achene.Botanically, Andy is right about everything except the lima beans (seeds) and maybe the peas. If she fed him sugar snap peas, then it would be a fruit; otherwise, they’d be seeds just like the lima beans. You’re welcome. ;-)
Okay, bad example with the German (and somewhere in the back of my mind I knew that name fact). Okay, she has to fly there for “Black Forest Cake” from the original source.

By that logic, she will have to fly to Dusseldorf for “German Chocolate Cake”.

I’m just waiting for her to discover that coffee is also fruit.
Or that cucumbers are more closely related to cantaloupe, crenshaw, honeydew and casaba than watermelon is.

German chocolate cake is made with [Sam] German’s sweet baking chocolate — nothing to do with Germany.

The fact that she had to say the word “biologically” didn’t indicate to her that something was wrong with her reasoning?

Beans and peas are legumes, not fruit.

And that makes them grains: like corn, wheat, sorghum, barley, rice…you get the idea. In all these we eat the seeds of the plant.
